After weeks of trying to scrounge up a single seat for Elton's big b-day bash at MSG this Sunday, I finally scored one today! :yay:

So what's $280 anyway??--this is an event I just couldn't miss! I'm sure at least a few friends will show up to help him celebrate.

Any other ICEr's attending the party? :birthday3: :birthday4:

I remember him saying (much like Mick Jagger) that he couldn't imagine himself playing Crocodile Rock at 30. I guess he never did say anything about 60.

How could Elton John be 60, he's only 16 years older than me and... oh never mind it does add up.

when did we all get so old??????????????????????????

Enjoy the show, I bet he pulls out some real surprises.

About £143, €210, or 28,000 shiny new Lincoln cents. :ohyes:

Actually, $280 is a lot of money for me, but in 2000 I spent $155 on the spur of the moment for a front-row ticket to Tina Turner's concert at MSG. I'll have to tell y'all how it came about sometime...

I read elsewhere that Ryan Adams was going to show, wonder if he did.

The CMT Crossroads him and Elton did is one of my favorite things ever.

It was a heck of a show. At exactly 8PM, a voice boomed out over the PA: "ladies and gentlemen, please welcome the last great president of the United States...Bill Clinton." Clinton gave a short introductory speech and then Elton and co. took the stage. Opening appropriately with "60 Years On," the show continued for nearly 3-1/2 hours without a break. 33 songs, from the old to the new, from the relatively obscure to the big hits. Old friends included Davey Johnstone on guitar and Nigel Olsson on drums. The Brooklyn Youth Chorus, a group of eager youngsters, added wonderful back-up vocals to many songs, especially on "Philadelphia Freedom." Midway through the concert, Whoopi Goldberg and Robin Williams appeared onstage with Bernie Taupin, to lead us in a rousing rendition of "Happy Birthday" while a memorial banner was rasied to the rafters. One of the many highlights was a rocking "All the Girls Love Alice," which featured spleen-rattling bass notes courtesy of the synths. Elton waxed nostalgic before "Empty Garden," which he said he will only play at MSG. I do, however, wish Elton would dispense with the lengthy coda to "Rocket Man" which has become a staple of his live shows. I think it's gonna be a long long time--before this song is over! The first encore, "Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding," really brought down the house, while a tender reading of "Your Song" closed the show on a sentimental note.

One surprise was the total lack of musical guests. I figured there'd be a dozen or two stars who would want to help EJ celebrate his b-day on stage.

I envy you, J-Bo! Sounds like a great show (though I could certainly do without the questionable opening introduction). I was expecting to hear about a lot of musical guests, but sometimes it is great to see a classic performer do his (or her) thing alone. Glad you had a great time!

Sounds fantastic, I'm jealous.

I was lucky enough to see Elton in Columbus on the Peach Tree tour, with my mom! and it was fantastic.

The man still rocks out like no other.

I'm also shocked by the lack of friends in attendance to help usher in his year 60

ALL of the individual live Elton tracks can be accessed and streamed via this link:

http://music.msn.com/eltonjohn?GT1=7704

Or, look around MSN...
I came across two other advertised "Happy Birthday Elton" links for MSN Music In Concert: Elton John, which also allows access to stream the entire track list from this MSG show.

I played the entire concert tonight - very good stuff, especially all of the rare tracks that Elton rarely plays.
I haven't heard "Empty Garden" live since 1984 when EJ vowed he wouldn't play it anymore. Thanks for bringing it back one more time...
No doubt this is coming out on DVD soon, and hopefully it will be the entire show. But if not... listen to the tracks now while they're available.

Enjoy...
Steve

While channel surfing last night I saw part of the Glenn Beck show on CNN and he was in a tither about Elton John's recent remarks about religion and the fact that there was a graphic of a burning church during his big concert. As part of his rant, Beck said he used to have all of Elton's albums, and that "the Elton John of the 70's is not the Elton John of today." I guess he forgot that it was the Elton of the 70's who recorded a little ditty called "Burn Down The Mission"!
