A week ago, at 10 pm Friday night the power to my furnace died, as did all lights & 1/2 the outlets on my 2nd of 3 floors. I panicked & obviously hired the wrong guy.

A week later, my furnace kinda partially works, A 200 amp breaker box has been replaced with a 100 amp breaker box (which all my friends who know more than me & 1 professional) tell me is both stupid & illegal, my furnace barely works & the main floor still has no lights & the dead outlets. Tonight's been a week. And yes, idiot me paid cash.

At least the guy does keep coming back, but it isn't getting fixed & he tends to run 2-7 hours late on all appointments. I'm still debating if he's a well meaning flake or something more serious. At least he has come back at least 2 (3?) times since he's been paid in full.

I've been told the best outcome is that somehow he'll find the short, & someday I'll have the money to get a new box (which I just paid for) & have an efficient furnace again.

Apparently if I report him, my power will likely be turned off for not getting a permit I didn't know I needed.

I've spent $640 on him & $130 on another guy who is a pro who basically told me guy #1 is an idiot & gave me some ideas. That was 2/3 of my house payment for December.

Person #2 (who comes recommended) told me he WOULD have done the whole job for $300-$400; but would now want $1300-$1400 to clean up person #1's mess. Xmas sales are UNBELIEVABLY bad. It appears Dec will be my 6th worst month of my worst year. I have an apt to s/w a bankruptcy attorney 2 days after xmas (ho ho ho).

Wish me luck, & thanks for letting me whine. I am cracking up.

A few years ago we hired a similar "grey area" professional to do some landscaping work for us to correct drainage issues at our house. It ended up costing us much more money in the long run. The guy was a friend of a friend and was well meaning but a complete idiot.

I just accepted a quote from a "real" company for $3,000 & had to beg for help on my December house payment (which I would have made if this hadn't happened). Still debating whether it's to my benefit to turn the fraudster in. I definitely can't until the remedial work is done (hopefully tomorrow) & the house is back up to code.

2013 has got to be better, right........

This just keeps getting better. Now my furnace needs replacing (hopefully happening tomorrow as I'm living on 2 small space heaters). I'm now up to $5941 of unexpected expenses.
