What foramat makes up the bulk of your music collection? Now, I'm not asking what format you most listen to, but rather the format in which you initially acquired the majority of your music.

(In the case of duplicates of the same album, count only your primary or first purchased format; so, if you own a CD and ripped it to mp3, count the CD but not the mp3s.)

I think in the last year, my digital music eclipsed my CD music and now makes up the bulk of what I've acquired. CDs had a nice run for me despite being a little late to conversion - I don't think I started primarily buying them until 1993/1994 - but I can't see going back at this point. The big giant walls of discs that currently makes my living room feel half the size, or the little silver hard drive tucked away beneath my desk? Easy choice. I'm not audiophile enough for the dip in sound quality to matter. (Though when I have equipment enough, I may be.)

Even though my CDs duplicate my vinyl collection to some degree, I still have four times as many CDs as vinyl LPs.

I still have tons (literally, I imagine) of vinyl left. But the Jimbo CD Archives are legendary.

You can keep your downloads and mp.3s--give me something to hold and obsess over, thank you very much. I think you'll find that most ICErs are still old-fashioned that way.

I still buy vinyl from time to time, if it's a quirky release or has cool packaging or whatever. A few of my favorite smaller bands are great about putting extra tracks on the vinyl versions of their albums. Bardo Pond and The Apples in Stereo have both done this. I love that.

But I no longer have a usable turntable. I have one of these in my living room:

But the thing chews through modern albums like a buzzsaw. It's really only good for crusty old jazz LPs I pull out of garage sales.

Vinyl is awesome if you have the equipment, but if you don't it becomes like my modest vinyl collection: a conversation piece.

I have loads of CDs, but I sold off or disposed of all my vinyl a couple of years back when we moved. Too heavy and awkward to transport, and I didn't feel like keeping them anyway. Heck, I haven't even had a turntable to play them on for 10 years! :) I haven't had a cassette player for almost that long either, despite hanging onto a precious handful of tapes I have not been able to replace with digital or CD copies.
Which brings me to digital, and the bulk of my music collection. Everything I have on CD, and everything I had on vinyl or cassette (that I could find), I have in digital format on the computer now. I keep everything in one handy library accessible from any computer at the house, most importantly my laptop. I can also access my music from anywhere in the world I have an internet connection using Orb. Digital and all the goodies that come with that format is the only way for me.

That post was almost Taftian in length. And did I just see Rob post in the ICE forums? Well done Taft, your pimping has been successful.

I'd have ditched my cassettes long ago, but 1) I have a hard time throwing things away, and 2) converting all those concert tapes from my boot trading days would be a monumental pain in the ass.

Though it pales in comparison to the Jimbo Archives, my CD collection is far larger than my paltry selection of vinyl. By the time I started making my own money, CDs were gaining in popularity, so that's what I focused on.

My collection of digital music is growing quickly (nearly all of it in lossless, of course!), but I don't see it ever eclipsing my walls of CDs.

I used to keep track of everything I had on vinyl, CD, etc. but I gave up trying a few years ago. It was just too hard to keep up with it! lol
Since I started buying CD's in '85, I began replacing my vinyl copies with compact discs.
I probably still have comparable to 5 crates of albums that I havent upgraded to CD. My guess on the CD's is probably around the 2000 mark...
and cassettes around 100,

Jeff

I would guess somewhere about 1998 the balance finally tipped towards cds.

I'm down to 4 milk crates of vinyl albums.

The rest is CDs, I have a few cassettes left too.

I can remember thinking I will only buy new CDs, not the albums I already own but that went out the window quickly.

CDs were an obsession for me for about 15 years. I basically re-bought all my favorite music in the CD format. But now that I've have all the classic rock albums I will ever need, the obsession is waning.

I voted for vinyl. I have gotten rid of very little vinyl that I've collected over my lifetime. Quite a few years back, when strapped for cash, I sold some LP's. I promised myself I would never put myself in the position of having to do that again, and I have been fortunate to be able to keep that.

I have a lot of CD's(in comparison with the normal person, and excluding several members here), but I'm pretty sure I still have more vinyl.
I don't play it as often, but I have 2 working, easily accesible record players, so it's still active.

Approximately how many CDs do you have, Jimbo? Just a rough guess.

Definitely upwards of 10,000. I honestly think it's somewhere between 12-13,000 by now.

I voted for CDs, although most of them are burned. I still have a crap load of Cassettes that I bought when I was in Primary and Secondary School.

Yeah, seriously. I'm somewhere in the 1,500 range, and I though that was a lot. But it's not! :ohno:

I replaced most of my vinyl with cd's in the 80's before I knew better.
