AMW,

That's definitely the one that Jim was referring to.

And FWIW, it definitely wasn't a Borders exclusive... nice work on the b-sides list, everyone!

Mine came from Best Buy, so it must have been widely available with the DVD upon initial release.

Earl,

There actually is a "Missing" CD single from 1996. There's a picture of the cover here:

There was a disc that came with the LIVE IN NYC DVD if you got it through the PBS pledge drive. It had 7 songs culled from the DVD, the LIVE 1975-1985 and maybe another source, but I don't think they had anything that didn't come from another official release.

I have a live unofficial version of "And the Band Played" that I really dig, but I'd love to have a studio recording. I was really disappointed when it wasn't on TRACKS. I don't think it had an official release.

Thanks Jay. I was not aware of that one. What other songs are on the Missing single?

You're welcome, Earl. The other songs on the "Missing" single are Darkness On The Edge Of Town, Born In The USA and Spare Parts. All are taken from Austereo MCM's "Planet Live" April 19, 1996 in Berlin.

And I also found "Missing" on a 1997 "Secret Garden" single that includes "High Hopes" and "The Ghost Of Tom Joad" (album version).

Pip.

Is this the disc to which you're referring?:

Yes, that's the other Springsteen PBS exclusive... as previously noted, not as interesting as the Seeger-era disc.

Still, "Born To Run" and "She's The One" from "Live In Barcelona" have not appeared elsewhere on CD. I'll be fixing my list and following up on many of these, but I also did want to mention that I believe that "We Shall Oversome" from the 1998 Seeger compilation was carried over intact to the 2006 "Seeger Sessions" album, although I could be wrong as I don't own the 1998 Seeger comp.

AMW,

Fair point. I am not certain whether they are the same version.

His version of Born In The USA on this single is acoustic and amazing, and gave me a whole new respect for this song. I never liked the original version much, but since hearing this version, i can't listen to the original anymore. I picked up this single used quite a few years ago for a couple bucks, and it quickly became one of my favorite discs.

Yes, the acoustic version really drives home the point of Born In The USA.

I was at Walmart in East Meadow (Long Island, NY) Saturday night - yes, I'm a real party guy :sigh: - and they had both versions of the Essential Bruce Springsteen 3-disc collection.

The original version in the jewel box was $12.88.

The "limited edition" in the "eco-friendly packaging" was $15.88.

:o

Something I've noticed: Around the time Obama was elected, Springsteen premiered a new song that, at the time, was called "Workin' On A Dream". (Not difficult to believe--the man has already written songs titled "Growin' Up", "I'm Goin' Down", "57 Channels (And Nothin' On)", "All Or Nothin' At All", "Dead Man Walkin'", "Leavin' Train", "Goin' Cali", "Waitin' On A Sunny Day", "Countin' On A Miracle", "Long Time Comin'", "All I'm Thinkin' About", "You'll Be Comin' Down", "Livin' In The Future", and even "Froggie Went A Courtin'".) Of course, at some point between November and January, the Boss must have gotten hisself edumacated in spellin' or somethin', because all of a sudden, at the age of fifty-nine, "Workin' On A Dream" became "Working On A Dream" [italics mine].

Has Sarah Palin suddenly made it uncool for wealthy old liberals to pretend to talk like us reg'lar folks?

Alternatively, here's the original press release announcing the album, as released on November 17 last year:

http://www.shorefiremedia.com/index.php?a=pressrelease&o=2462

Note that the letter "g" is present and correct. Perhaps the title was just being misreported in a couple of early reports?

(also in the "I think you're reaching a bit with that one" file, we can find 'Dancing In The Dark', 'Racing in the Street', 'Meeting Across the River', and 'Working on the Highway', just off the top of my head - there may be others).

I was at Wally World yesterday and whenever I look through their CD section, I despair. More and more titles in that eco-crap packaging. Many of them just a cardboard sleeve and nothing else. :ohno:

From the New York Times http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.h ... %22&st=cse

Quote:
ARTS, BRIEFLY; N.F.L. Scores Debut of Springsteen Song
COMPILED BY DAVE ITZKOFF
Published: November 12, 2008
When you think of colossal, muscular athletes crashing into one another at full speed, think of Bruce Springsteen: a portion of Mr. Springsteen's recently recorded song ''Workin' on a Dream'' will make its premiere on NBC's ''Sunday Night Football'' game between the Dallas Cowboys and the Washington Redskins this Sunday, a representative for Mr. Springsteen said. Mr. Springsteen, above, first played an acoustic version of the song at a rally for the presidential campaign of Senator Barack Obama in Columbus, Ohio, in October. A segment of the song will be played during a halftime package of football highlights. Mr. Springsteen and his E Street Band will also be the halftime entertainment at Super Bowl XLIII on Feb. 1 in Tampa, Fla.
