Tory MP launches campaign to secure knighthood for Led Zeppelin's Jimmy Page

Conservative MP has launched a campaign to secure a Knighthood for Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page.

Louise Mensch, who became MP for Corby in Northamptonshire at the 2010 general election and who is married to Peter Mensch, manager of the likes of Metallica, Muse and Snow Patrol, has revealed that she has suggested Page be knighted in the next Honours list.

Mensch tweeted that she had proposed the Led Zeppelin man for a Knighthood, writing on Twitter.com/LouiseMensch: "I've proposed Jimmy Page. Waiting to see if that finds favour with Honours Directorate. I hope so."

The MP also denied that her husband, who used to managed Page, had any involvement in her suggesting the guitarist, adding: "Clearly there is nobody more worthy of a knighthood and I am glad to say I have gathered support from every major record label in the UK."

Page had previously been awarded an OBE in 2005 for his charity work helping street children in Brazil.

Why no remastering campaign, not even a 40th Edition for Led Zep 4, I thought for sure Page would be all about that.

Richard Drew, the man who created the cover art for Led Zeppelin's III album, has died.

The reclusive artist, known professionally as Zacron, lost his battle with cancer in January, but his family members announced his passing only recently. He was 68.

Drew studied art with Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page at the U.K.'s Kingston College of Art and created a book with Page in the mid-1960s, according to Classic Rock magazine.

He created groundbreaking album art for Led Zeppelin when he inserted a picture-filled rotating disc under the cover image.

I wasn't sure whether to put this in the Kinks or Zeppelin thread, but I figure alot more people read this one.

Ray Davies is not a big fan of Jimmy Page.....interesting article about Jimmy at some early Kinks recording sessions.

Pageia Obscura: Jimmy Page and The Kinks Controversy

Jimmy Page's work as a session guitarist has been scrutinized and analyzed, disputed and upheld in every which way, but none so much as his work with British Invasion pioneers The Kinks.

In the film "It Might Get Loud" U2's guitarist The Edge actually asked Jimmy point blank about his work as a session guitarist:

The Edge: "You know those early songs you played on in the studio, what did you actually play on that I would have heard? There's all these legends."
Jimmy Page: "Sometimes you could hear what I did and other times you couldn't hear what I did, but I was on "Goldfinger" that was fantastic. She did one take and collapsed at the end..."
The Edge: "And like The Kinks stuff?"
Jimmy Page "I did some Kinks stuff."
The Edge: "Really?"
Jimmy Page: "Yeah. I mean it all got out of hand about what I had done and what I hadn't done."
The Edge: "Oh really, it became like the stuff of legend?"
Jimmy Page: "Yeah, before you knew what it was, you had done everything."

It is undisputed that Jimmy Page played with The Kinks in the studio, what is disputed is what he actually played on. Much of the debate centers on one recording in particular, The Kinks' breakout hit, "You Really Got Me". Despite all the rumors and legends that Jimmy played the lead and iconic solo on the track, I'm here to tell you, it didn't happen.

According to Shel Talmy, The Kinks' producer, "Jimmy did play rhythm on the first Kinks LP, and certainly did not play lead on "You Really Got Me", which preceded the LP by several weeks, or anything else for that matter. I only brought him in to play rhythm because at the time, Ray wanted to concentrate om his singing." Page himself echoed Talmy's assertion in a later interview, "Concerning the Kinks' work, though, and looking at it in retrospect, my presence at their sessions was to enable Ray Davies to wander around and virtually maintain control of everything, without having to be down in the studio all the time. Ray was producing those songs as much as Shel Talmy was . . . more so actually because Ray was directing them and everything. At one point, there were even three guitars playing the same riff."

No doubt feeling like much of their acclaim for their efforts was being taken away, The Kinks' leader, Ray Davies would himself weigh in on the controversy in defense of himself and his brother with some pointed comments, "Dave Davies is a good guitar player and he played the solos on all our records. Jimmy Page played tambourine on “Long Tall Shorty” because he came into the studio as a friend of Shel Talmy's. [...] Dave Davies did all those solos and Dave started that sound. The take of "You Really Got Me" that was actually released was the third take -- there was a demo thing with Dave playing lead, a second cut which may have had Jimmy Page on it (and which Pye Records still have in their vaults) and a third which definitely had Dave on it. I know because I was standing right next to him when he played on it. And that's the one which was released. Jimmy Page did play tambourine on our first album. It's very good tambourine and he's a very good musician. I'd use him if I was producing a record."

In another interview with Creem Magazine, Ray Davies, went a little further with his thoughts, "I'll tell you something about Jimmy Page. Jimmy Page thinks he was the first person in the world to ever put a B string where a G string should be. And for me, that's his only claim to fame. Other than that, I think he's an asshole... Jimmy Page and a lot of other people subsequently came to our sessions when we became hot, and I think he played rhythm 12-string on "I'm A Lover, Not A Fighter", and he played tambourine on "Long Tall Shorty". The curious thing is I wrote a song called "Revenge" which had a riff like "You Really Got Me". Our publisher at the time was a man named Larry Page. To get a part of the action—this was a real con trick—he registered the song as a co-composer, and he wasn't even on the session for the demo. So maybe the fact that Larry Page was credited as co-composer of Revenge" adds some substantial evidence to Jimmy Page's claim.

"I remember Page coming to one of our sessions when we were recording "All Day And All Of The Night". We had to record that song at 10 o'clock in the morning because we had a gig that night. It was done in three hours. Page was doing a session in the other studio, and he came in to hear Dave's solo, and he laughed and he snickered. And now he says that he played it! So I think he's an asshole, and he can put all the curse she wants on me because I know I'm right and he's wrong. He's an asshole. Dave is a great guitar player. He's got his limitations, but he's never been given justice for doing that. He made that when he was 16-years-old. He created a sound, and after that came Jimi Hendrix and all the fuzz boxes."

Jimmy, was shown Davies comments and issued this response, "Ray Davies said things like "He wasn't anywhere near our sessions, he played tambourine." I never played tambourine on the damned records, I played guitar. But I didn't play on "You Really Got Me," and that's what pisses him off, so he uses that as his main contention. ... I played on the subsequent records."

Jimmy would go on to clarify, " I didn't really do that much on the Kinks' records. I know I managed to get a couple of riffs in on their album but I can't really remember. I know that Ray didn't really approve of my presence. The Kinks just didn't want me around when they were recording. It was Shel Talmy's idea. One aspect of being in the studio while potential hits were being made was the press -- too many writers were making a big fuss about the use of session men. Obviously I wasn't saying anything to the press but it just leaked out . . . and that sort of thing often led to considerable bad feeling."

In the end what can be gathered from all the back and forth, he said she said is that Jimmy did not play on "You Really Got Me", and was not present for that session. However, he was present for the sessions to record The Kinks' self titled debut LP, and did contribute rhythm backing guitar parts across a number of songs on the record. Unfortunately, which specific songs on the album Jimmy appeared on are lost to history.

Led Zeppelin to Receive 2012 Kennedy Center Honor

by: Chad Childers
Yesterday

Led Zeppelin have been announced as one of the recipients of the 2012 John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts honors. The 35th annual celebration will take place Sunday, Dec. 2 and Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, and John Paul Jones will all be on hand to receive the honor.

Kennedy Center Chairman David M. Rubenstein stated, “Led Zeppelin’s John Paul Jones, Jimmy Page and Robert Plant transformed the sound of rock and roll with their lyricism and innovative song structures, infusing blues into the sound of rock and roll and laying the foundation for countless rock bands.”

The evening will also find blues great Buddy Guy, actor/director Dustin Hoffman, late night television host David Letterman, and ballerina Natalia Makarova receiving tributes as well.

The bash will take place at the Kennedy Center Opera House, with the 2012 honorees seated with the President of the United States and Mrs. Obama as they receive tributes from their peers and fans. In addition, each of the honorees will be included in a supper dance prior to the festivities with the Obama family, and a State Department dinner hosted by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Dec. 1, the night prior to the celebration.

The 2012 Kennedy Center Honors will be broadcast on CBS Dec. 26 at 9:00PM ET/PT.

Is Robert just being coy here or is he really saying he'd do a Zep tour in 2014? I know the media are already running with this-but I await a message from Plant saying that's not what he meant at all.

(hennemusic) Robert Plant was featured on Sunday night's episode of Australia's "60 Minutes" and was grilled about Led Zeppelin doing more reunion shows and Plant had a surprising answer.

Plant sat down with reporter Tara Brown to discuss a variety of topics, including his roots, Led Zeppelin's formation and legendary history, including the 2007 reunion show that was released as "Celebration Day."

"We just wanted to play and see what it was like and be good once," said Plant. "Because we'd been bad so many times in the interim since John passed away; it was time to be good … and we were."

Fans continue to clamor for more Zeppelin live shows, with Plant taking most of the heat for the lack of forward movement on the project.

"You know, the two other guys (Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones) are both Capricorns and they keep schtum (quiet); they don't say a word," maintains Robert. "But they are quite contained in their own worlds and they just leave it to me to do this (interviews)."

Brown: "…to be the bad guy"

Plant: "I'm not the bad guy."

Brown: "Well you are for all those Led Zeppelin fans who'd love you to say 'yes, we're reforming.'"

Plant: "Well, then you need to speak to the Capricorns ... 'cause I've got nothing to do in 2014."

Jason Bonham is among those bemused by Robert Plant’s recent comments about the chance of a Led Zeppelin reunion next year. In an interview laced with as much cheeky humour as serious reflection, the singer referred to Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones when he said: “You need to see the Capricorns – I’ve got nothing to do in 2014.” Drummer Bonham says on his Facebook page: “I just watched Robert’s interview, where he says he’s free in 2014. Not sure how to read it – what do you think?”

40 Years Ago: Led Zeppelin Release ‘Houses of the Holy’
by Matthew Wilkening

On March 28, 1973, Led Zeppelin released their fifth and arguably most wide-ranging album, ‘Houses of the Holy.’

After releasing their first four records in just under three years, Zeppelin were finally afforded just a bit of breathing room with which to create ‘Houses of the Holy.’ The album came out 16 months after their landmark (and technically untitled) ‘Led Zeppelin IV.’ They responded by delivering some of their most complex, nuanced work ever, and by exploring new genres on tracks such as the reggae-influenced ‘D’yer Mak’er‘ and the James Brown funk-inspired ‘The Crunge.’

“Although everyone was clamoring for another ‘Led Zeppelin IV,’ it’s very dangerous to try and duplicate yourself,” guitarist Jimmy Page explains in the book ‘Light & Shade: Conversations with Jimmy Page.’ “I won’t name any names, but I’m sure you’ve heard bands that endlessly repeat themselves. After four or five albums, they just burn up. With us, you never knew what was coming next.”

“Got ‘Houses of the Holy’ on the box / I got it all cranked up, cause yeah, that s— rocks!”
- Chickenfoot, ‘Big Foot‘

Highlights of the LP include the dynamic, folk- and rock-mashing ‘Over the Hills and Far Away,‘ the beautifully intricate ballad ‘The Rain Song‘ and the moody, keyboard-heavy John Paul Jones showcase ‘No Quarter.’ The album closes with a Robert Plant-penned love song to the band’s fans, ‘The Ocean,’ which features one of the most famous count-ins of all time courtesy of drummer John Bonham: “We’ve done four already but now we’re steady…”

In order to keep things down to single-vinyl length, the band reportedly left future classic songs such as ‘The Rover,’ ‘Black Country Woman‘ and most famously, ‘Houses of the Holy‘ either unfinished or unreleased following the recording sessions.

When asked why the intended title track never made the album, Plant refused to lie to ‘Get the Led Out‘ author Danny Somach, instead declaring, “Being silly, isn’t it? I mean, I could go into some great profound reasoning, but… I can’t even remember why. I think we thought, ‘Well, we’ll hold onto that and we’ll do something (with it).’ It was just having a laugh.”

Led Zeppelin underwent a massive tour in support of ‘Houses of the Holy,’ which found the band glitzing up their stage show with lasers, mirror balls, pyrotechnics, fancier outfits and the like. Naturally they broke just about every box office record known to mankind.

Despite traveling around the world in a swanky, custom-painted jumbo jet, the trek (and no doubt, the cumulative effect of their previous several years) left the band exhausted. It would be 18 months before they toured again, and nearly two years before they released their next record, 1975′s double-album masterpiece ‘Physical Graffiti.’

Good for Jimmy (I'm sick of Plant too-let him be an old man if he wants, but enough of the slams at his time in Zep)

From hennemusic.com:

In an interview with the New York Times, Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page takes a shot at singer Robert Plant over the role he’s been playing in distracting both himself and fans with veiled commitments to reunite the legendary band for a tour.

“I was told last year that Robert Plant said he is doing nothing in 2014, and what do the other two guys think?,” explains Page as he promotes the upcoming expanded reissues of Led Zeppelin’s first three albums next month. “Well, he knows what the other guys think. Everyone would love to play more concerts for the band. He’s just playing games, and I’m fed up with it, to be honest with you. I don’t sing, so I can’t do much about it. It just looks so unlikely, doesn’t it?”

Plant raised the hopes of Led Zeppelin fans about a possible reunion trek when made the comments in February of 2013 during an interview with Australia’s 60 Minutes (watch the full interview here).

“You know, the two other guys (Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones) are both Capricorns and they keep schtum (quiet); they don’t say a word,” Plant told reporter Tara Brown. “But they are quite contained in their own worlds and they just leave it to me to do this (interviews).”

“…to be the bad guy?”, asked Brown. “I’m not the bad guy,” replied the singer. “Well you are for all those Led Zeppelin fans who’d love you to say ‘yes, we’re reforming’,” she challenged. “Well, then you need to speak to the Capricorns ... ‘cause I’ve got nothing to do in 2014,” answered Plant.

Fast forward to present day: Plant will spend the summer on the road with his current band, The Sensational Space Shifters, and release a new solo album in September.

Last month, Plant told the BBC that the chances of the group performing live again are “zero.”

The singer revealed more thoughts about why he remained the lone hold-out for a reunion tour during an interview with Rolling Stone earlier this month.

"A tour would have been an absolute menagerie of vested interests and the very essence of everything that's shitty about about big-time stadium rock. We were surrounded by a circus of people that would have had our souls on the fire. I'm not part of a jukebox!"

Yet, in the same session, Plant again sent mixed message to fans when he made more comments about a reunion while refusing to make a statement forever ruling out the possibility of him fronting Zeppelin again. "I don’t think there’s any reason for me to do that," he said. "Otherwise we’ve got nothing to be mystic about...Everything will develop as it develops. All doors are open. All phone lines are open. I don't hear from anybody. Talk is cheap...But I just think everything has to be new. Then you can incorporate history."

A reunited Led Zeppelin – with drummer Jason Bonham sitting in for his late father, John – last performed when they headlined a December 10, 2007 concert at London’s O2 Arena as a tribute concert for friend and Atlantic Records founder Ahmet Ertegun. The event was eventually released in 2012 as “Celebraton Day.”

So now, after three years working on the Led Zeppelin reissues series, Page says he’s no longer waiting around for Plant to commit to reuniting, and the guitarist is itching to get on the road.

“Absolutely, absolutely,” he tells the New York Times. “I definitely want to play live. Because, you know, I’ve still got a twinkle in my eye. I can still play. So, yeah, I’ll just get myself into musical shape, just concentrating on the guitar.”

“So let’s hope that some time in the next year, I’m seen to be playing out there,” added Page. “Because that’s the only thing that’s been missing. But you have to do what you have to do, and I had to do this [reissue project].”

On June 2 (June 3 in North America), Led Zeppelin will reissue their first three albums, each with a companion disc of bonus material.

Deluxe editions of "Led Zeppelin", "Led Zeppelin II" and "Led Zeppelin III" are the first projects announced as part of an extensive reissue program that will see all nine of the band’s studio albums reissued in chronological order, each remastered by Page.

If Page is so irritated with Plant's messing around with people asking dumb questions in interviews, then Page should just hire another singer and go on tour. Page must just want to manufacture a little drama to help sell the new reissue series, because there is in fact no real drama because everyone and their brother knows that Plant will not tour with Zeppelin again. Come on Jimmy, bringing up something that Plant said in an interview 15 months ago?!

I don't think Jimmy needs any help selling the remasters and I'm not sure how this article would help with sales.

If they get a new singer, they should hire the dude from Wolfmother to tour with them.
