"Sgt. Pepper's" Voted Best Album Sleeve

Friday, January 5, 2007

The Beatles classic 'Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band' has the best album sleeve of all time, according to a new poll.

The Fab Four's 1967 album cover beat out competition from the artwork of Pink Floyd's 'Dark Side of the Moon,' in the survey by CD and DVD replication service Brandedmedia.

In third place is The Rolling Stones' 'Sticky Fingers,' followed by Scissor Sisters' eponymous debut in fourth place.

Rounding out the top five is Mike Oldfield's 'Tubular Bells.'

Who did they poll for this one? I would think they went to a nursing home or something--until I got to the Scissor Sisters...

Reminds me of the Blood, Sweat and Tears cover in the Turkish bath. I agree on Sgt. Pepper, and in second place would choose Quicksilver Messenger Service: "Happy Trails" with that old west Remington-like painting.

George Harrison Lyrics Fetch $300,000

The lyrics for "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" come complete with corrections.
Tuesday, January 16, 2007

Lyrics handwritten by George Harrison for his Beatles hit "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" sold for $300,000 at an auction in Arizona Monday.

The song, written and recorded in 1968, reveals the deep rift that had developed within the band at the time - and the lyrics come complete with corrections made by Harrison and a verse omitted from the completed track.

The reverse side of the sheet of paper features the lyrics to "Hey Jude" handwritten by Beatles road manager Mal Evans.

McCartney and Mills: 'No Divorce Settlement Yet'

British newspaper News Of The World claimed they agreed to a $63 million divorce settlement.
Monday, January 22, 2007

Paul McCartney's estranged wife Heather Mills has denied reports she's agreed to a $63 million divorce settlement with the former Beatle.

British newspaper News Of The World claimed Sunday that McCartney and Mills had agreed to a financial settlement after a bitter six month battle, but Mills' lawyer Mishcon de Reya has denied the report.

The law firm said, "With regard to the article in yesterday's News Of The World, we would like to state that there has been no offer made whatsoever at any time to our client and therefore no settlement has been agreed."

The singer split from his second wife Mills in May last year after four years of marriage, and the pair began divorce proceedings in July.

Mills' Sister Calls for Media to End 'Harassment'

Paul McCartney's sister-in-law Fiona says that Heather's life has been threatened since the split.

Wednesday, January 24, 2007

Heather Mills' sister has called on the British media to stop "harassing" her family, because they have been left terrified by a number of death threats.

Fiona Mills blames the "general" condemnation of her sister, following her split from former Beatle Paul McCartney last year, on "disgusting, untrue and hurtful stories" published in British newspapers.

In a letter posted on Heather's website, Fiona writes, "The main reason that I am responding is that I am deeply concerned for the safety of my sister and her daughter.

"They are receiving death threats, not because she is getting a divorce, but because some of the British tabloids decided from day one that they wish to destroy her, create hatred towards her and profit out of doing so.

"The vicious agenda of these tabloids has resulted in death threats to my family and I want to try to do something."

Last month, Mills was warned by British police that she was being targeted by a vicious gang hailing from McCartney's hometown of Liverpool, England.

Fiona adds, "Heather and Beatrice no longer receive the protection that would be afforded to any other member of the McCartney family facing such threats.

"It is extremely stressful to be informed by the police of a serious risk to your life and then to be followed by strange cars and people that may or may not be paparazzi."

Yoko Ono driver denied bail

Yoko Ono's former driver has been denied bail for a second time.

Koral Karsan was refused after New York State Supreme Court Justice Daniel Fitzgerald said there was nothing new in the case to justify releasing him.

Prosecutors allege that the 50-year-old will try to head overseas to his home in Turkey if bail is granted.

As previously reported on NME.COM, the driver was arrested in December after threatening to release pictures and audio tapes of John Lennon's widow, unless she paid him $2m (£1m).

He later pleaded not guilty to four counts of first-degree attempted grand larceny.

His lawyer Robert Gottlieb has called for the earliest possible trial date, possibly at the beginning of February, reports BBC News.

No Super Bowl commercial, but it looks like the Beatles on iTunes, and hopefully some remasters are on track. This from Playlist Magazine:

Apple, Apple Corps reach new settlement
By Peter Cohen

Apple’s legal difference with the Beatles’ company, Apple Corps Ltd., have been settled, according to a press release offered by the two organizations on Monday.

Apple Corps. sued Apple in 2003 for breach of contract, alleging Apple’s move into the music space with the iPod and iTunes Store violated the terms of a 1991 agreement. Apple later won the case — an English judge declared that use of apple’s logot was still permitted under the terms of that agreement. Apple Corps stated that it would appeal the ruling.

Apple CEO Steve Jobs stated that the resolution will “remove the potential of further disagreements in the future.”

Neil Aspinall, Apple Corps general manager, said that his company looks forward to “many years of peaceful cooperation” with Apple.

The two companies stated that they’ve entered into a new agreement regarding the use of the Apple brand and logos — an agreement which replaces the 1991 agreement. Apple will own all trademarks related to “Apple” and will license certain trademarks back to Apple Corps for their continued use. Apple will also continue to use its name and logos on iTunes.

The actual terms of the settlement are confidential, although both organizations said they agreed to bear their own legal costs.

Apple, Inc.'s (formerly Apple Computer, Inc.) Press release:

Apple Inc. and The Beatles' company Apple Corps Ltd. are pleased to announce the parties have entered into a new agreement concerning the use of the name "Apple" and apple logos which replaces their 1991 Agreement. Under this new agreement, Apple Inc. will own all of the trademarks related to "Apple" and will license certain of those trademarks back to Apple Corps for their continued use. In addition, the ongoing trademark lawsuit between the companies will end, with each party bearing its own legal costs, and Apple Inc. will continue using its name and logos on iTunes. The terms of settlement are confidential.

Commenting on the settlement, Steve Jobs, Apple's CEO said, "We love the Beatles, and it has been painful being at odds with them over these trademarks. It feels great to resolve this in a positive manner, and in a way that should remove the potential of further disagreements in the future."

Commenting on the settlement on behalf of the shareholders of Apple Corps, Neil Aspinall, manager of Apple Corps said, "It is great to put this dispute behind us and move on. The years ahead are going to be very exciting times for us. We wish Apple Inc. every success and look forward to many years of peaceful co-operation with them."

Yoko Ono's Former Driver Pleads Guilty

Koral Karsan, who attempted to blackmail Lennon's widow, was sentenced to 60 days in jail.

Tuesday, February 20, 2007

A former chauffeur who attempted to blackmail Yoko Ono for $2 million, pleaded guilty Friday to reduced charges.

Koral Karsan, 50, pleaded guilty to attempted grand larceny in the third degree in a New York City courtroom and was sentenced to 60 days in jail.

He admitted he threatened to try and embarrass the widow of former Beatle John Lennon unless she gave him "more than $3,000."

He was initially charged with first-degree attempted grand larceny for allegedly threatening to release embarrassing recordings and photos of the 73-year-old unless she paid him $2 million.

Karsan will now be moved from a city jail cell to federal immigration custody. He is in the U.S. illegally and faces deportation.

The mind boggles that there could be recordings and photos of Yoko that are more embarrassing than the ones that have already been released.....

Heather Mills Going `Dancing With the Stars'

Feb 21, 10:04 AM EST

The Associated Press

NEW YORK -- Here's a bet there won't be any Beatles songs on the next "Dancing With the Stars." ABC announced Wednesday that Paul McCartney's estranged wife, Heather Mills, will be among the competitors.

Mills will be the first contestant with an artificial limb to compete on the series, which returns for its fourth season March 19. She lost the leg in a motorcycle accident in 1993.

Olympian Apolo Anton Ohno, boxer Laila Ali, former basketball star Clyde Drexler and actor Vincent Pastore, who played gangster Salvatore "Big Pussy" Bonpensiero on "The Sopranos," are also in the cast.

Jerry Springer, one of last season's competitors, teased ABC's "Good Morning America" audience before tossing out Mills' name.

"She may be a sentimental favorite," said Springer, even though Mills has Yoko Ono-like favorability ratings among many Beatles fans. Her selection delivers a message that whatever challenges people face in life, they can dance, he said.

Mills is an activist for animal rights and elimination of the use of land mines.

"Dancing With the Stars" has proved to be a substantial hit for ABC, although this is the first time it will air when a season of Fox's "American Idol" is under way. ABC will air its dancing competition on Monday and Tuesday nights to avoid going head-to-head with "American Idol."

Actor and former country star Billy Ray Cyrus, former 'N Sync member Joey Fatone, Miss USA 2004 Shandi Finnessey, former "Entertainment Tonight" host Leeza Gibbons, model Paulina Porizkova and former "Beverly Hills, 90210" star Ian Ziering round out the cast.

I saw this in the paper today, and the first thing I thought was, How in the world is she going to dance those kind of dances with an artificial leg? I have visions of her doing some sort of kick and the leg goes flying off and hits one of the judges!

NEW JOHN LENNON DOCUMENTARY TO PREMIERE NEXT MONTH

A new John Lennon documentary, filmed by Yoko Ono's former husband, filmmaker Tony Cox, will premiere in Maine on March 6th. Showbizspy.com reported that the film, titled 3 Days In The Life, was shot by Cox in January 1970 while the Lennons were in Denmark visiting Ono's daughter Kyoko, who was then living with Cox. Additional footage also features Lennon recording at home at his British estate, Tittenhurst Park.

3 Days In The Life will premiere at the Patricia Baldwin Whipple Arts Center at the Berwick Academy in South Berwick, Maine. There is no word yet whether the film will see a wider release.

The raw film was sold several years ago with previous reports stating that the uncut nine-plus hours included footage of Lennon composing a song called "Make Love Not War," which eventually became his 1973 hit "Mind Games."

In other Lennon documentary news:

A BBC documentary titled Working Class Hero has been pulled, after John Lennon's widow Yoko Ono withdrew support. Britain's The Sun reported that the film, which listed Ono as an executive consultant, halted production after discovering that the documentary included footage of Lennon's first wife Cynthia Lennon talking about how Lennon's drug use and affair with Ono broke up their marriage. Ono was also upset with Lennon's psychiatrist for appearing in the film and discussing Lennon's "possessive love for Yoko."

Lennon's record label EMI records claimed that the film, which was narrated by actor Gary Oldman, was pulled because "it was not finished in time to coincide with a planned album release."

Yoko Ono halts Lennon film premiere

The premiere screening of a documentary film about John Lennon entitled 'Three Days In The Life' has been cancelled after Yoko Ono threatened legal action.

The film was scheduled to screen tonight (March 6) at Maine's Berwick Academy, but the school's headmaster decided to cancel the screening after receiving warnings from Ono's lawyers, reports the Associated Press.

Ono contends that she has not authorised public viewing of the film.

The film's executive producers were unable to obtain an artist release from Ono, so they decided to offer free screenings at American high schools and colleges. Ono's lawyers have now forbidden that, too.

The film is said to include footage of Lennon composing songs and rehearsing for a BBC programme on which he performed 'Instant Karma' publicly for the first time.

I guess if Instant Karma doesn't get you, Yoko's lawyers will. Are there any reports that indicate exactly what her objection is to this film?
