I was flipping the channels on the tube yesterday and was amazed to find "The Linda McCartney Story" on some channel. After watching it and laughing my ass off for the next 5 minutes, it got me thinking... What is the worst rock movie ever made? And what better place to ask this question but on the IMWAN forum!

I tried watching Tommy not long ago, and I found it doesn't even hold up as camp. It's just awful. Some of the musical performances are OK--especially Tina Turner and Eric Clapton--but the visual sequences are embarrassing.

Jack Nicholson's "Go To The Mirror, Boy" is even worse than Steve Martin's "Maxwell's Silver Hammer" or George Burns' "Fixing A Hole."

Nonetheless, SPLHCB is the Worst Rock Movie Ever.

"Tommy" was pretty bad. (I've NEVER seen a good Ken Russell film)

One movie I finally got around to seeing a few weeks back was "Head", starring the Monkees. While I've always enjoyed their music, I was never much of a fan of the TV show, and while the "Head" soundtrack is one of my favorite CD's, the film itself...er...

I've never been a strong proponent of the "music video as art form" school of thought, and while "Head" clearly stands as prototypical MTV, to me it is also a self-indulgent mess.

I LOVE that movie!

I have the DVD and re-watch it maybe three times a year. Toni Basil! Terri Garr! Blowing up a Coke machine with a tank!

It's teh aw3some!

I never saw Tommy or SPLHCB, so I have to say "KISS meets the Phantom of the Park" is the worst one I've seen.

Any "200 Motels" fans out there? Though I'm a big FZ fan, I tried to watch this once and couldn't make it through.

Can't Stop the music was/is pretty godawful(not that I was expecting anything earth-shaking)

Also Kiss Meets The Phantom of The Park(or Attack of the Phantoms) is godawful, but I can at least have a few laughs at that one.

This is a stretch, but I'm wondering if the Elvis films can be included here. I'm not talking about the concert films....just the 60's formula awful ones. I love his music, but those films...wow. Actually I do like a couple of them, and most of the others are good for a few laughs at how bad they are, but a few of them are just plain bad.

I made it through. I love the musical sequences, but besides that I only got a handful of laughs from it.

There is always Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.
But hey...I like that one.

A best of Rock Movie list would be much shorter.
But in the spirit of the thread - and since someone
already mentioned KISS Meets The Phantom of The Park" -
I nominate Phantom Of The Paradise.

I haven't seen it in probably 30 years but I remember that I enjoyed Phantom of the Paradise with music by the midget, Paul Williams.

There is another one I like.

To me, it's neck-and-neck between Sgt. Pepper . . . and Tommy - with Tommy getting the nod because of the laughable performances by Ann Margaret and Oliver Reed.

While Ann Margaret was certainly an excellent singer/entertainer in the Las Vegas showtunes mode, her style was definitely not suited for rock music. When Oliver Reed, a fine Shakespearen (spelling ?) actor, opened up his mouth to sing, I was cringing in the movie theater. The best that could be said for Jack Nicholson's singing (which was rightly criticized earlier) was that it lasted for only one song.

A very painful movie to watch and listen to.

I think that can result in the death penalty in a few countries.

The first made for TV biopic on The Beach Boys, I think it was called "Summer Dreams", really suffers from being low budget. Its one redeeming element is that it contains more Dennis scenes than the superior two part made for TV biopic "The Beach Boys - An American Family".

I don't like Ken Russell's films either - with the curious exception of "Women in Love".

I am a huge FZ fan - this is a GREAT movie! Seen it a hundred times at the moives, drive-in's, own VHS copy...

when it was at the drive in - triple feature - last moive shown...as the movie continued more and more cars drove out...at the end there were less than 10 other cars there

I like Phantom of the Paradise too. I used to think it would make a good Broadway show, and then Andrew Lloyd Webber stole my idea!

I was excited when I finally tracked down the soundtrack on CD, from Canada. Paul Williams wrote some good songs for this, and some years later for the Muppet Movie, also.
