And to think...the Orioles had a 3-0 lead in that one....before it got away. :D

They couldn't use the scoreboard in Philadelphia after 19-3. There is no provision for 20, never mind 30 runs.

My eyeballs popped out when I saw that score last night. BTW, if you guys want depressing. I was going back and forth between the Yankees-Angels game and the Cubs-giants when the Yanks were getting hammered. I saw Linceum of the Giants throw a beautiful ball-game. Even though he left two runners on base towards the end of the game, the Giant relievers, on cue, came in and promptly blew the game.
I watched the Yankees get their revenge last night. As I was eating breakfast and then lunch a little bit later on, I was going back and forth between the Indians-Tigers and the Dodgers-Phillies (and thinking of Federico sweating out that one). I now have the Cubs-Giants on.

I recently read a funny remark by a comic.

The official chant of the NY Mets is "Lets Go Mets!"

The official chant of the NY Yankees is "Boston Sucks!" :)

Unfortunately, the mirror is often the official chant of the Red Sox. I was at a playoff game against the Yankees a couple of years ago and it was the ugliest crowd I've ever seen. I don't even bother going to Sox/Yankees games anymore.

I love the Sox, and hate the Yankees as much as anyone, but if your focus is on the team you hate rather than the team you love you shouldn't even bother.

Oh yeah, did I mention the Yankees suck? Sorry I didn't want to be too much of a bore.

The start of last night's Yanks-Tigers game was delayed 4 hours by rain. Finally started playing at 11PM, went into extra innings, and the game ended at 3:30 AM Eastern time. It was supposed to be televised on Ch. 9 in NY, but they went with regular progamming, and the Yanks own YES channel didn't pick it up for some reason. Just as well, the Yanks lost 9-6, coupled with the Red Sox sweeping a doubleheader from the White Sox, the Yanks are now 6-1/2 games back, as Clemens got rocked.

No, I value you my life too much lol (just kidding).

I've been to one Sox/Yanks game at the Stadium, and it wasn't particularly enjoyable. The crowd was horrible...just like the Fenway crowd is at a Sox/Yanks game. I guess I'm getting too old--I used to love these games, but now that I'm in my 40s I'd prefer to be able to take my kids without them having to listen to taunts all day long. I know I sound like an old fogie.

One good thing about this year is it has brought back my old Yankees antipathy. In recent years it has been hard to hate the Yanks because they had a lot of likeable players like Jeter, Matsui, and Posada. But this year we have the whining of Johnny Damon, the return of steroid boy (or now, more likely HGH boy), and A-Hole. And of course Roger (I'm a $20 M .500 pitcher) Clemens. They are back to being hate-able again.

GO SOX!

The reaction to this season by Yankees fans and Red Sox fans is fascinating. Many Red Sox fans are acting like the Sox are in second place, not first. They lose a 2-1 game to the Devil Rays and the season is coming apart, in spite of the fact that they had extended their lead in recent days. The Sox have extended their lead by over 50% this week, but you wouldn't know it by listening to people in New England.

Yanks fans, on the other hand, are acting like they are in first. They are full of confidence because of their record since the All Star break, and ignore the fact that they went a full month and a half without playing a team with a winning record. And now that they are playing winning teams, the pitching staff is really showing its weaknesses. By the way, what happened to Mariano Rivera? He looks more like Greg Gagne lately (the 2007 version, not the good one)

I'm sure it's a reflection of the histories of both teams. And I think it speaks much worse of Red Sox fans. It's pathetic all of the gnashing of teeth that goes on. And by acting this way, I don't think Sox fans are giving themselves a chance to enjoy what has been a very nice season. The Sox are very well balanced--their pitching is outstanding, they are third in the league in defense, and they are near the top in runs scored (not that you would know it by reading the Boston Globe). It's not a perfect team (JD Drew was a huge mistake), but this season has been a blast for me at least.

Jimbo,
I got to watch a little bit of the game on my Dish last night after I got home from seeing Gordon Lightfoot at the local Cuthbert Amphitheatre here in Eugene (btw, a surprisingly nice show which had no opener and Gordon doing two sets. On top of it, I can still smell the perfume of some woman who was near me during last night's show. The smell refuses to go away-even as I type this).). The only thing of it was that I fell asleep at some point during the 10th Inning. When I woke up, my screen was blank. I don't know if DirecTV actually showed the whole game or if it got yanked after it hit midnight PST or not. I woke up at about 12:15 before I finally got around to hauling my carcass to brush my dog's teeth and then mine before I finally reached golden slumber. And no, we do not use the same toothbrush (for you smarty-pants out there who would dare to ask! LOL!).

I don't believe the Yankees will catch the Red Sox. As well as the Yankees have played since the break, they are still 4 games in the loss column behind Seattle for the wild card spot, actually losing ground in the past week or so. And, as was mentioned, many of my fellow Yankee fans are talking as if being in the playoffs this year is now a given. I don't see it that way yet.

I agree with you on all of this. It will be interesting to see whether Brian Cashman can survive if the Yanks don't make the playoffs. Right now people are excited about the team, but I doubt whether they can make the playoffs with the pitching they have. I think Cashman is doing a good job of managing the transition to younger home-grown talent. I'm not sure the fans will see it that way though.

the sox go to the bronx for three games this week starting tuesday.

the yankees play the tigers monday and boston has an off day, might make a difference.

i say that if the sox can sweep in the bronx this week and leave there with an 8+ game lead, the yanks will definitely be in serious trouble.

tuesday, wednesday, and thursday this week are very very very big!

renny

p.s. right now it's beckett vs. clemens on wednesday. hope i can get this one on TV somehow.

Renny, I think that Wednesday is one of the nights that espn shows a game of the night. If so, I would be surprised if they aren't showing Sox/Yanks.

I agree that this is a big series, but the Yankees have more at stake. They really need to sweep the Series. The Sox have the easiest remaining schedule among contenders, and the Yankees can't afford to lose any of these games at home.

Renny,
If you lived out here, you'd have a standing invitation to come over and watch any ballgame you wanted at anytime at my place.

If the Mets don't start getting their act together the subtitle of this thread will be all to relevant.

I'm going tomorrow night, I'm hoping for the best.

I'm lucky they don't show Mets games down here in the Outer Banks or else I'd be sick. Yuck.

Oh what a joy!!!!
I despise the Mets with every fiber of my being (except David Wright) and the Phils might sweep them AGAIN! Even if they don't they woke up the arrogant Mets who talked a good game over the weekend dismissing the Phillies. What a boob Marlon Anderson is-no need whatsoever to tackle Iguchi and give the Phils the win thanks to interference. What a douche! (See why we got rid of him years ago???).
I would love the sweep tomorrow, but if not, this was wonderful. We'll see what happens down the stretch, but man the Phils have kept fighting even having used a club-record tying 27 pitchers this year due to injury. The Mets will most likely hold on, but it's not a given now! Sorry Mets fans-nothing personal, I just despise them.

Your Phils had our number last year too. We've been poor against the Braves as well ... my Metsies might end up winning the division while having losing records against the two teams right under them, which is sort of humiliating.

You gotta give credit to the Phils. They battle and give the Mets fits as they should. The Mets are just not inspiring much confidence as the season comes to a close. Just over 30 games left.

And the Yankees haven't given up. Their keeping the pressure on Boston as only the Yankees can.
