What band for you just came running out of the gate kicking ass and taking names? I can think of many, but I'll just list a few for now (okay, maybe more than a few):

The doors
Black Sabbath
CSN
Led Zeppelin (most of it was ripped off, I know)
The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Are You Experienced?
Guns N' Roses - Appetite for Destruction
Pearl Jam - Ten

I've been trying to think of some great soul debut albums, but classic soul was more singles-oriented.

Some people think highly of Procol Harum's first. I'm not sure - I think I need more convincing about it.

OK, here's a no-brainer.

King Crimson's "In the Court of the Crimson King" ! (arguably the start of prog-rock? or was it Procol Harum? or was it Traffic?....)

OK, another no-brainer. Traffic.....
