It appears that Edwin Diaz may have torn an Achilles during a postgame celebration.

Considering the stakes, no MLB players should be allowed to participate in the WBC.

I believe he tore his knee ligaments.
I don’t like the Mets, but I felt bad for him and his brother.
The WBC needs to be in November or simply discarded with, but we’ve seen celebration injuries in a number of regular MLB games before.

Diaz suffered a "full thickness" tear of the right patellar tendon and is having surgery right now. He'll likely be out for the entire season, and his right knee will be questionable for the rest of his career.
For a meaningless celebration after a meaningless game.
Mets should sue to extricate themselves from the contract.

That's a shame for Edwin Diaz and for all baseball fans. I hate freak accidents like this, but there's no telling when they're going to happen.
I agree the world baseball classic should adopt the same schedule / format as the World Hockey Championships - goes on at the same time as the playoffs, and countries can pick up players who don't make it, or that are eliminated in the first round. But I do see value in it as a means of growing the game.

I figured something like this would happen. I thought it would be Alonso. I have no interest in the WBC and never have.

Clayton Kershaw was unable to pitch for team USA in the WBC because he was unable to secure insurance. I wonder if Diaz had his 2023 season insured.

The Mets will be fully insured for the Diaz injury, so at least there’s that.
I assume Robertson and Ottavino will slide into save situations.
That win meant everything to Puerto Rico hence the celebration.
It was just unfortunate, and quite awful to see.
I remember Kendry Morales hitting a walk-off Grand Slam and suffering a season-ending injury at home plate in the celebration.

Just because we are Americans, doesn’t mean we should dismiss how important this tournament is to the Latin American and Asian participants. I don’t watch it, but I get the joy these players feel for representing their countries.

is "classic' the right word for this..........what else could you call it? Injuries happen on Opening Day. NFL players tear knee ligaments in non-contact drills in training camp. How many MLB players are already out just from Spring Training this year? The list was staggering. In sports, you get hurt. I don’t see how it’s the WBC’s fault seeing as you can get beaned by a baseball in Spring Training. That being said, I think there will be serious talks about moving this to November or scrapping it all together, although money talks and these games are all sold out.

Great game between Mexico and Japan, and since the Solstice is a holiday in Japan, they probably had 70 million viewers.
