Yikes. Apparently there's been an offensive drought this year from what I'm reading, points are down and all the rest.

11 of the NFC's 16 teams - including the entire South Division - are currently .500 or worse. The first place Seahawks and Vikings are the only squads in the Conference with winning records outside of the NFC East.

And the Vikings aren't that good yet under McConnell. I don't like raining on the parade of my home team, but they got damn lucky in a couple of those games. Their only threat within the division is GB and they've been stinking up the field lately.

Unless things change after the Vikes bye, it'll be one and done at playoff time. If a fan doesn't have confidence in their team despite their record, that doesn't bode well. Of course, I could be proven wrong.

The media is all over my former home team, Dallas. The one thing that saves them is defense. The Cowboys haven't played a really really good team yet. It's going to get ugly there. Again, I could be proven wrong.

Jets make a quick move. With a 5-2 record and the Patriots coming up next week, they needed to keep the running game going.

Ah ha. Now the Matt Ryan decision becomes clear.

Quote:
He won’t play again, for reasons rooted in his contract. Put simply, once the team decided (and it was clear from coach Frank Reich’s comments that owner Jim Irsay made the decision) that Ryan won’t be the quarterback in 2023, it was time to pull the plug on 2022.

Ryan’s contract already pays him $12 million in base salary next year, fully guaranteed. But millions more would become fully guaranteed if Ryan suffers an injury that keeps him from passing a physical by the third day of the 2023 league year in March, when the payments that are currently guaranteed for injury become fully guaranteed.

Specifically, Ryan has $7.205 million in additional 2023 salary guaranteed for injury, and a 2023 roster bonus of $10 million, which is also guaranteed for injury. That’s $17.205 million that the Colts would potentially owe Ryan (in addition to the $12 million) if he emerges from the 2022 season with an injury that prevents him from passing a physical by the middle of March.

Except I would have to think that the insurance company that is tied to that injury guarantee is going to want their own doctors to do it, and there's no way a separated shoulder prevents him from passing a physical almost 5 months from now. Whie it might keep Ryan from ever playing for the Colts again, I don't think it's going to let the Colts off the Financial hook for the 17 Million he's owed. And either way, Ryan's getting it - he passes the physical, the Colts owe him; he fails, and the insurance company does.

Huh? I'm understanding this as the Colts can cut Ryan next year and he'd "only" be owed $12 million -- he would then get $17 million more if he actually plays for the team OR if he's injured and thus can't play for another team.

So they're keeping him on the bench to guarantee he doesn't get injured. Since he's eaten roughly 80 hits in jus 7 games, I think it's only a matter of time that he'd be injured playing behind this offensive line.

The Indy Colts QB situation has been quite a mess for years now, better they tank and start over with an upcoming blue chip draftee.

2018/ Andrew Luck
2019/ Jacoby Brisset
2020/ Phillip Rivers
2021/ Carson Wentz
2022/ Matt Ryan
2023/ ??????

I think that's the plan, TBH. From what I'm reading, this owner is forcing this move onto the coach and 2023 is supposed to be a deep QB class with a lot of good prospects.

That all said, there's been a lot of turnover but the only out-and-out mistake I see is Carson Wentz. Jacoby Brissette was a back-up they were forced to play because Andrew Luck retired just as the 2019 season began, so they really had no choice there. Phillip Rivers played very well overall for the Colts, with the team getting a 11-5 record and losing a playoff game in Buffalo by three points (with a missed field goal in the game from a very makeable distance).

Matt Ryan has been a disaster but I think most of it is on the offensive line -- the guy has been hit around 80 times in just 7 games and they somehow have one of the worst running games in the NFL, despite having Jonathan Taylor and some other very talented RBs. They let their LT and starting RG go in FA and the replacements have been absolute disasters. I've watched every Colts game and when they've protected Ryan, he's actually been pretty good. All three victories this year have been because of game-winning drives he orchestrated.

But I get the move. If he was just 30 years old, it would make sense to ride out a rough season and build around him next year. But he's at the end of the line and since this team isn't nearly as talented as they believed, they might as well go into a soft rebuild to beef up their line and get a young QB who has plenty of time to wait for the rebuild's completion (and while on a rookie contract).

I'm pretty bummed about all this. People dog Matt Ryan, especially for the 28-3 thing, but I've always been a big fan. He basically played perfect in that Super Bowl (I think it's the only one where the losing QB has a higher passer rating than the winning QB) and was let down by his defense. They were one holding call and missed block from winning a Super Bowl (though that play call was idiotic, they should have just run the ball and kicked the field goal). But he's top ten in passing yards, touchdowns, game winning drives and fourth quarter comebacks. His resume is fantastic and honestly, he's looked better physically than Philip Rivers did in his season with Indy... but Indy had one of the best OLs in the NFL that year, whereas now they have one of the worst.

I didn't think they were winning the Super Bowl, but I thought they'd have a very fun and memorable season. Alas.

Eagles are 7-0 after trashing the Steelers 35-13.

Hurts was brilliant throwing 4 TDs, 3 of which went to AJ Brown and all were with pinpoint accuracy which the experts claimed he didn’t have.

The Eagles D had 6 sacks as well.

Really happy for Hurts that he's having a nice season after getting a lot of grief last year about "only" being a running QB.

Colts' back-up Sam Ehlinger actually looked pretty decent but showed that the problems on offense go far beyond whoever's under center. The line is still not what it was just two seasons ago and I don't think they will be able to consistently score points until they find an upgrade for Matt Pryor, who is genuinely abysmal no matter where they stick him.

The craziest stat the announcers gave during yesterday's game was that Colts' QBs have lost six fumbles this year and during his entire time in Indy, Peyton Manning had lost only 8 fumbles!

Boy, I didn't see this until just now. The Panthers' PJ Walker completes a Hail Mary to DJ Moore tie the game against the Falcons and the extra point wins the game.

Except -- DJ Moore takes off his helmet during the celebration and gets a 15 yard penalty. The Falcons elect to enforce it on the exra point try, which the kicker shanks, and the Panthers go into overtime... where they lose.

Boy, quite a costly helmet removal!

Did you see that Pete Carroll got excited after Geno got a 1st down late in the game and bumped into an official, who threw a flag and called a penalty on… the Seattle Mariners for sideline interference?

Well, I actually saw this morning that it shouldn't have been a penalty, LOL! He removed his helmet off the field, so no flag should have been thrown!

I was watching that game and thought the same thing.

It was dumb, but it wasn’t a penalty.

They missed a FG in OT anyway, so they deserved to lose.

Tons of trades today.

It’s not the old NFL anymore where there used to be one or two deals.

I think the Rams Super Bowl win is putting the old "slowly build through the draft" strategy out of vogue for a lot of teams. Owners and GMs are seeing that the Super Bowl contender window is smaller than ever for teams these days and putting all their chips on the table to push for a title.

I guess Denver realized Wilson wasn't going to open that window for them and traded their top pass rusher to get some draft picks back.

Maybe the Bengals should spend all their remaining money on every offensive lineman out there balling out for bad teams.

From what I understand, elite linemen on both sides of the ball are hard to come by and can be pretty expensive.

Yay! One of the biggest Jets victories in quite awhile, they beat the Bills and Zach Wilson out duels Josh Allen. The Jets running game at the end of the game sealed the victory and the Jets D is for real. Solid win.
