My boss, dear friend and professional mentor Joel Whitburn passed away peacefully overnight at the age of 82. He had been in failing health in recent weeks, but we were not expecting him to go this quickly. I last saw him on Sunday and we had a nice visit. Arrangements are pending.

Damn. That is a gut punch. His work meant so much to me. Thank you for everything, Mr. Whitburn.

Now I suppose he and Jimbo will play Billboard chart parlor games in heaven forever.

I've been buying his books since 1975 just for the joy of leafing through them and bringing back memories. Thank you Joel for all you've done and all your Billboard books have meant to me. R.I.P.

I have over 50 of his books.

My obsession with the charts has been decades and this man and his books and passion for music will never be forgotten.

I too have been buying Joel's books since late 1975. Out of curiosity, I just counted them up: 77 books, 45 annual supplements, 2 DVDs. Wow...

We corresponded by email several times, he implemented two of my suggestions, and two corrections. He turned me into the chart freak I am today, not only for Billboard charts, but also Cash Box and Record World, and UK and Canadian charts as well. It's all his fault !!

R.I.P. Joel, and thanks for helping me remember the music of my youth, and before and after...

I loved the annual books and was sad when those stopped. I recently wrote to them to ask where the 2010s weekly chart book was. I've spent way too much money on the books, but really love them. I won't count on how many I have, but I'm somewhere in the middle of the numbers that have been given here.

Right here at my fingertips at the office version of the JIMBO Library. Jim was a JW disciple. He is as like a member of the family. Included in Jimmy’s Christmas presents was always the latest version. I probably bought him twenty over the years.

RIP
