From Andrew Farago: Quote: The Traveling Wilburys formed in April 1988. If you wanted to reboot them today, you'd need:
*solo artist who started in 1990 *frontman who started in 2010 *frontman who started in 2005 *solo artist who started in 1996 *lead guitarist/songwriter who started in 1996
So who would you pick? You can go by the year they were signed or the year their first album came out. This challenge is much harder than it looks!

Everyone I'd want to pick has a career that started before 1990. Who could you choose? Some of the guys who used to be in Blur or Oasis? A few leftover members of Hootie & The Blowfish? Former members of Rage Against the Machine?

Yeah, someone would have to provide a list of people eligible in each of the five categories. Then I could pick the one person from each list whose name I vaguely recognized.

Yes, but some of the names might contain particular letters of the alphabet that I have always favored.

Very few artists still alive if any who started in the 90s and especially after 2000/2005/2010 have 1/100th of the resume, catalog or talent that they had.

I'm trying to imagine Justin Hawkins and Noel Gallagher in a band together...I don't think they're fond of one another...Ed Sheeran might have to break up a few fights...

Some different answers from what I’ve seen. Mine was: 1. Moby 2. Bruno Mars 3. Maria Brink (In This Moment) 4. Eminem 5. Rob Thomas An equally terrible supergroup!

I love ITM, but Maria doesn't fit in with a Wilburys vibe.
I kind of thought that Kid Rock (in his root rocks role) for the 1990 slot, and the lead singer from 5FDP for the 2005 slot would fit. They also kind of fit the roots rock feel of the Wilburys, and while they're not as big as the actual Wilburys, they are certain larger names from that rock era . Sheryl Crow and Jewel were also both considered for 1990 and 1996 respectively.
If I was going to do a pure metal one, Maria would definitely be in there, but the solo slots are much more difficult to fill, since almost all metal acts are bands.

1. Mariah Carey 2. Harry Styles 3. Lady Gaga 4. Jay-Z 5. Matt Roberts (Three Doors Down) That's my terrible supergroup.

frontman ... or woman
Jeff Lynne released his first of two solo albums in 1990; let’s have him produce for continuity
1990 - John Doe (formerly of X) 2010 - Nanna Bryndis Hilmarsdottir (Of Monsters and Men) 2005 - Rhiannon Giddens (Carolina Chocolate Drops) 1996 - Duncan Sheik 1996 - Tracyanne Campbell (Camera Obscura)

I'll give this a shot:
*solo artist who started in 1990: FISH (former lead singer of Marillion) or BRUCE DICKINSON (former & future lead singer of Iron Maiden) *frontman who started in 2010: JOHN GRANT (former frontman of The Czars whose debut solo album was released in 2010) *frontman who started in 2005: ANDREW STOCKDALE (from Wolfmother) *solo artist who started in 1996: JASON FALKNER (formerly of The Three O'Clock and Jellyfish whose debut solo album was released in 1996) *lead guitarist/songwriter who started in 1996: ALEX LIFESON (during a break from Rush he released the "Victor" album in 1996)

Agreed, and The Darkness released their first album in 2003 and had been a band since 2000, while the Foo Fighters debut album was in 1995, although I do agree it was a Grohl solo project initially. Plus, Oasis began releasing music in 1994.

I find this a fascinating thought exercise. I recognize few of the prospectives names, which drives home to me how extraordinary the Wilburys were.
As an aside to that - can you think of an alternate super band from the same time frame as the original? Like Paul instead of George?

As an aside to that - can you think of an alternate super band from the same time frame as the original? Like Paul instead of George? Paul filled in with Nirvana once and made a memorable single. Ringo has been all about the supergroups and so has George’s son Dhani.
