This is just damn depressing. One of the nice guys of rock and roll, and a phenomenal musician gone too soon. An incredible drummer who stood up to the challenge of playing behind the most famous drummer of his era, and a strong enough vocalist to sing Rock and Roll in Wembley Stadium with Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones.

Damn, this hits hard. Like so many others, I first noticed him with Alanis Morissette. He really stood out in her band, and I remember the disappointment when he left for Foo Fighters. I can't say I was ever a big Foo Fighters fan, but I did like several of their projects and I've been getting into them a little more. It really seemed more like a bunch of guys who were friends instead of one of the biggest bands in the world. His temperament and attitude seemed perfect for them - someone who took his job seriously but never forgot to have fun while doing it, and that joy was evident. And I'll always remember his part in Rush's induction ceremony at the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame.
RIP, sir. And thank you.

Hussongs Cantina in Ensenada. Had to sneak back in to get my boombox!
Now these rock icons are dying when they’re ten years younger than me. That’s damn depressing.
Two of my favorite shows were with him behind the kit. One was probably 20 years ago and it was FF and The Red Hot Chili Peppers. Just an awesome high frickin’ energy rock and roll show.
The other was FF at the Patriot Center at George Mason University. There was a power outage and even though the band stopped playing with no amplification, Taylor kept on going like nothing had happened. He continued playing for 25 minutes or so while Dave went out into the audience and just went around the whole arena hugging all the fans he could get to. All with the emergency lights on and EVERYBODY was grooving to Taylor’s beat.
RIP man.

He also was good friends with Chris Squire of YES so he loved their music and was a close friend of Jon Davison, the current singer in YES.
Quote:
In 2015, Davison appeared at a Foo Fighters concert, and joined his childhood friend Taylor Hawkins, to perform the Rush song "Tom Sawyer" with them.
They did a RUSH song because Dave Grohl admits, doing YES is hard.
Quote:
He was a childhood friend of current Yes lead vocalist Jon Davison. It was Hawkins who suggested Davison to Yes bassist Chris Squire even before the departure of replacement vocalist Benoît David. "Strangely enough, Jon's name came up when we started working with Benoît", Squire recalled. "In fact, my friend, Taylor Hawkins, had been telling me for years: 'If you ever need a replacement (singer), I know exactly the guy.'"

Yeah, I saw the cancellation. They'll be back, eventually, Dave just can't not make music. But I expect it'll be a year or two
Curious whether it'll be under the Foo Fighters name though. I could definitely see him going out under his own name.
I think they accomplished an incredible amount (even a documentary and a horror movie) and now Dave can do other things.
He’s done producing and sessions and Probot and other projects and anyone would work with him.
The last few albums weren’t very good, but they remained a top live act.
Whatever Dave does, it’s gonna be a little while.
Taylor is irreplaceable in many ways.
While I agree with this, on the other hand, I don't see this in the same way as the Nirvana situation; Krist walked away from the industry almost completely, but this time, there's 4 other guys with Dave - and in many ways they're dependent on him. And with Hawkins being such a huge Queen fan, I'm not sure Dave would accept that sometimes the show can't go on, since I'm fairly sure Taylor would want it to.
And yes, I do think that Hawkins would be very difficult to replace - from a skill, personality, fit, and as the second face of the band, it's going to be hard to find someone that covers all of those points.
