Has anyone taken the plunge and purchased an Upconverting DVD player? If so, did you notice a significant difference or is this just a little gimmick? Either way, it will probably fall by the wayside once Blu-ray becomes more affordable, because I would assume (perhaps incorrectly so) that future players would not only be backwards compatible, but also would offer some form of upconverting on their own.

I've never had the chance to see one in action. Recently, a friend who's really into high end video told me on his hi def system the upconverting looks worse then when he turns the feature off.
