The top of the Mets lineup is pretty solid now with Nimmo back but from the DH down to catcher the hitting was just awful last season. That cost us the season and they need to correct that quick. The Mets did screw up the July 31st deadline (Darin Ruf anybody?).

I like the pitching, we have 2 solid starters, we have one of the best closers in baseball, we have a batting champ, a HR slugger, we are not far off. Getting Robertson for the bullpen really helps the eighth inning, leave Diaz for the ninth and Timmy Trumpet.

Once the Mets had some home grown pitchers but now are dependent on mercenaries. Maybe it will work but probably not. What we are seeing is the end of the Mets trying to rebuild from within and from now on it will be a win now philosophy with all the costs that it means.

Hey the 5 of them got 2 turns the rotation together once. Once.

The Mets staff so far (as of 11AM EST) :)

Not too shabby, it also just might be the best staff in baseball though as Houston showed, they also get thing done).

I see that the Met's tax penalty right now is higher than the total Twins team salary.

But, hopefully the Twins actually sign a player or three before Spring Training starts.

Senga is a pitcher I thought the Twins could target and afford. He looks like he could be good.

Where does that tax money go, anyway, into the revenue shared equally among all teams?

Congratulations to Jason and your Jays, getting Chris Bassitt. He was good on the Mets. Like deGrom, I don't think Bassitt enjoyed being in New York and just wanted out. It seemed like the Mets had no chance of signing him. Hope he does great for you!

Thank you, Linda. the Team and I worked really hard through the night to get a deal done, and now that we have him, the top 4 starting pitchers in our rotation should cover about 1/2 our innings for the season. Enough with this 5 innings and hope stuff.

I also like the Kiermeier siging; takes him away from the Rays. moves Springer to right, and doesn't tie up a huge amount of money that might get in the way of signing of Bichette and / or Vlad Jr long term for big big money

There's only 3 real gaps - a number 5 starter, a great set up man, and a left handed power hitting corner outfielder. Unless it's Brian Reynolds out of Pittsburgh, Moreno or Kirk can get two of those from the right team, and then sign the third as a FA.

Yes. It's why it's referred to as a competitive balance tax.

It's not going to fix the problem between the haves and have nots, though. I don't care if the A's or Rays move, but Pittsburgh needs to stay where it is; so much history in that city.

So, if it's shared equally, then the teams that pay in get 1/30th of the tax back?
Or is it divided up by different percentages based upon some complicated but supposedly more-fair system?

Just when we were trying to get used to the new Mets starting staff sans deGrom, Walker and Bassit comes rumors that Carrasco might be on the block because the Mets have Peterson and Megill in the wings. Guess it makes sense if Senga and Quintana are solid #3’s and 4’s.

I would not be a fan of trading Carrasco. With 2 older starters at the top and a #3 who is not accustomed to the common rigors of an MLB schedule, they will need 7 good starting candidates, at a minimum.

With yesterday's trade, Manny Pina is now the highest paid A's player at $4.5 million.

i've been saying since he came up with the yankees that gary sanchez is just not a good catcher, real good hitter, though.

Scary Gary behind the plate is what my friends were calling Sanchez last year. Batted .205 with little production.
Twins took Gary on mostly because that was how they were able to move Donaldson's salary. And when our projected catcher,
Jeffers, went down with an injury early in the season, Twins had to depend on Sanchez way too much. Still… that was no reason
for the team to parade him (or Jeffers for that matter) out there regularly on off-catching days as our DH. Sigh…

It'll be nice to have a catcher again who can throw out a runner at 2nd. Welcome aboard, Christian Vasquez.

It is just shocking how the career (or lack of career) Gary Sanchez has had in baseball. He looked like he would be one of the immortals but man he has been bad for years now. I felt he cost Girardi his job with the Yanks too (though his time was running out too).

The Basic Agreement, the competitive balance tax is distributed by MLB as follows:

The first $2,375,400 of proceeds collected for each Contract Year shall be used to fund benefits to Players, as provided in the Major League Baseball Players Benefit Plan Agreements.
50% of the remaining proceeds collected for each Contract Year, with accrued interest, shall be used to fund benefits to Players, as provided in the Major League Baseball Players Benefit Plan Agreements.
25% of the remaining proceeds collected for each Contract Year shall be contributed to the Industry Growth Fund and, with accrued interest, used for the purposes set out in Article XXV.
25% of the remaining proceeds collected for each Contract Year, with accrued interest, shall be used to defray the Clubs’ funding obligations arising from the Major League Baseball Players Benefit Plan Agreements.[11]

The Basic Agreement has also instituted a competitive balance lottery. The Competitive Balance Lottery, which was agreed upon as a part of the 2012-2016 Basic Agreement between MLB and the Major League Baseball Players Association, gives Clubs with the lowest revenues and in the smallest markets the opportunity to obtain additional draft picks through a lottery. The 10 Clubs with the lowest revenues and the 10 Clubs in the smallest markets were entered into a lottery for the six selections immediately following the first round of the First-Year Player Draft.

More than anything, Gary Sanchez has benefitted from having his career year on the Yes network; Players for the Yankees leave an outsized impression on the sport, and if it's a good one - even if it's misrepresentative - they can coast for years on fans remembering him well, and get confused when he sucks. And of course, if a player stinks it up in the Bronx, and it can stick with them forever as well, fair or not.
