The more I think about it, the more I think it would be a savvy move by the Twins to throw some outrageous money at either Carlos Correa or Trevor Story for one year, something like 1.5x what they're looking for… but for only one year.
Sell it as chance for the player to work on their long-range contract during the year or in the next off season, which should be quite a bit more stable than this year was.
This would give the Twins • a shortstop • a chance to spend the money that they didn't • more time to evaluate Lewis and Martin • a really great trade chip at the All-Star Break if their season completely sucks
Jays send 2 B+ prospects, and 2 C+ prospects to Oakland for Matt Chapman. According to the DRS metric, he will drop the teams ERA by about 0,25 runs per game, and our number 6 hitter will be capable of hitting 30-35 home runs per season. And if we can fix the swing and miss to get him back to a .250 average, this will be another massive steal for Atkins and Shapiro.
Springer at CF Vlad at 1B Teo in RF Bichette at SS Gurriel in LF Chapman at 3B Grichuk / Kirk at DH Jansen / Kirk / McGuire at C Biggio / Espinal at 2B
for all the talk - I'm ready to go now. Although I'd love to find a left hand hitting outfielder capable of playing CF from the bench we could move Grichuk for. But whatever.
The hilariously terrifying (for other teams) rumor is the Jays trading a couple A+ prospects for Ramirez at Cleveland to play 2nd. He'd slot in 2nd, and move everyone down. A line up where Matt Chapman hits seventh is the all star game.
New York Yankee pitcher Ralph Terry passed away this week at the age of 86.
He might be most remembered for the homerun he let up to lose the 1960 World Series to the Pirates. Withn two years however he won 23 games and was a star in the 1962 World Series against the Giants - winning 2 games including game 7.
RIP.

And I’m still trying to figure the Braves letting Freeman go and forking out nearly $200 million to Olson.
The Colorado thing I think was them knowing they had to get someone. Although them getting rid of Arenado just to sign Bryant a year later was kind of stupid. But...
It ties into the Freeman issue; I think teams have become much more hesitant to do long term big extensions for players who would be local icons by the time the deal is over. They don't want to run the risk of 33-34 year old guys becoming 10 and 5 guys on their watch. Even beyond the whole age 35 thing from a contract length perspective, it's about avoiding the kind of local massive pressure to re-sign an aging superstar because he's a local hero. Better to get rid of them before that kind of attachment comes in with your team, from a business perspective.
It's bad enough (from a GM's perspective) to be paying a lot of money for player seasons after age 35. But add in a MVP record, a WS Champion, and a guy with a 10 year plus history with the team, and they'd be under a lot of pressure to pay them until 40, or take the kind of PR hit Colorado did when they traded Tulowitzki.
Olson's deal will be over when he's 36; Freeman will be paid until 38, and is 25% cheaper in AAV (22.8 vs 27), while not being 25% worse a player, especially for the last 2 years of the deal, when Olson could be better than Freeman.
I think it's dumb, because I think there is a monetary value to the heart of the team guy.. And I do think more importance should be given to the production difference between stars and superstars (maybe we need a Wins Above Top Quartile stat) But I think that's the economic rationale for why they chose Olson over Freeman. Now, when LA beats Atlanta in the playoffs, they may regret this, and I will laugh.
Edit: just realized that AA would be really sensitive to this, given what he saw happen with Jose Bautista here in Toronto; his performance fell of a cliff, Shapiro got roasted for not bringing him back, and AA took a reputation hit bringing him in to Atlanta and watching him bomb out.

In contrasting news, I read yesterday that 81 year old Phil Roof showed up to Twins camp yesterday to pitch batting practice. Nice to hear he's doing well, and it sounds like he's in great shape--and not just for an 81 year old.
Michael Conforto remains one of the most notable names left on the free agent market, and while a return to the Mets currently seems unlikely, the team did offer him a new contract last spring.
According to SNY MLB Insider Andy Martino, the Mets offered Conforto a new contract in the $100 million range last spring, and the team would have gone as high as $120 million at that point. Now, Martino notes, the Mets are “not offering him anything like that now, and probably not anything.”
One wonders as the season begins, where will Conforto end up?

I like Conforto. If he played CF, I would like the Yankees to sign him.
I was suggesting a contract like this, essentially an overpay for one year of Trevor Story, on various Twins forums and on Twitter, and got a lot of people saying that I was nuts. My idea was, why not overpay (Twins had the money and there weren't many options left to spend it on), but my thought was that they could trade Story in July after having four months to evaluate whether Lewis could stick as a shortstop.
I know Carrea has two opt outs of this contract, but I don't know yet if the Twins are restricted in not being able to trade him to a contender in July as a rental or not.
At this point, I wouldn't be surprised to see the Twins trade for another pitcher. But then again, I wouldn't be surprised in July if they trade Correa, Urshela, and Sánchez (if anyone will take him) for prospects.
"March 19: Correa’s deal includes a limited no-trade clause this season, which becomes a full no-trade clause in 2023 and 2024 if he chooses to opt in to those contract years, per Bob Nightengale of USA TODAY (via Twitter). Without knowing the full details of the limited no-trade clause, it’s still a relatively impactful development. If the Twins fall out of contention this season, they’ll have a sizable trade chip on their hands in Correa."
I'm guessing that just means that he would insist on going to a contender, but who else would be trading for him in that case?
Hal should sell the Yankees. They have been dealing like a small market team for the last couple of years…now they have a team that resembles a small market team.
