The Yankees are acquiring 3B Josh Donaldson, SS Isiah Kiner-Falefa and C Ben Rortvedt from the Twins in exchange for C Gary Sánchez and INF Gio Urshela, per source. No money is changing hands in the trade.
How do you like Donaldson? So far, Yankee fans on reddit and YouTube don't like it.
you're getting 3/4 of an MVP calibre third baseman, who is going to rub anyone who isn't 100% dedicated to winning the wrong way. but if he plays 120 games a year due to injury, I'll be surprised.
I'm not against it. But I'll miss Gio but he was injured and had a fall off last year. Also, Donaldson did play 135 last year and had a .827 OPS.
Donaldson is a decent player, I thought. He can't play much more than 1/2 the time at 3B, I suspect. So, if the Yankees can use him at 3B with some off days at DH, you'll be okay.
And I was already warming up to Isiah Kiner-Falefa. Sad to see him go so quickly, especially after he wrote that nice message about being happy to come to the Twins--a team that really wanted him!.
Twins might try Gio Urshela at SS and give 3B to Luis Arraez (and see if young Jose Miranda can win the spot from him). I'm guessing that they mainly want Jeffers to catch and use Sánchez as backup if they keep him.
I know they had to make the deal, it's just a shame to give up another two good prospects. How will the Mets ever fix their farm system? Uncle Steve will have to start buying prospects outright from teams in need of cash.

I'll miss Gio. He had leg injuries last year but he's a slick fielding 3B and plays with joy.
just this week on MLB the yankees were talking about urshela being their everyday shortstop. who will play short for them now?
and they finally gave up on sanchez (the worst defensive catcher in all of baseball). i wonder if the twins plan to catch him, or make a Dh/1B, which the yankees should have done years ago.
and donaldson is old, wasn't it just just a few years ago the yankees learned they couldn't win with old guys.

Kiner-Falefa plays SS. It seems the Yankees don't want to block their top prospects at short by signing Correa or Story at this point. They're very high on Anthony Volpe and Oswaldo Peraza. Though, I think they may have to trade Peraza. So, IKF is a stop gap as well as Donaldson. This article sums the trade up pretty well,

the yankees do not have a very good infield at all.
Well, they now have a new left side and at least the players.will playing their positions. The last couple of years they had players playing out of position.
I was thinking that Donaldson and Kiner-Falefa on the left side would be quite good defensively, certainly far better than Urshela at 3B and no one at Short for the Twins and Sanchez behind the plate.
To be fair, I was surprised when I woke up today that Urshela or Sanchez hadn't already been traded by the Twins to someplace else.

Rumor has the Twins going after Story to play short, so that would work. And if they're talking about that, I don't think the Twins are going to rip it down, and Urshela and Sanchez are still decent enough players.
And yes, IKF and Donaldson are a solid enough defensive left side. As long as Donaldson is healthy. Bear in mind, though, I haven't seen him a lot with the Twins, and it's been a few years since he was here in Toronto, so he may have lost a step.
Injuries kept Donaldson from being outstanding on the Twins but it wasn't his fault that the Twins sucked donkeys last year. He certainly wasn't the player that he had been while in Toronto when he was on the field but I was happy to have him there.
Twins lost a lot of big bats trading away Cruz, Garver, and Donaldson; that combined with having little pitching right now shapes up to be another donkey sucker of a year.
Even if they are in on Story it's not a great team, and they had money enough to pick up Story without trading Donaldson and Garver. And they still could have traded for Sonny Gray and sign someone like Big Mike Pineda again for an okay pitching staff.
I kind of hope that the Twins aren't in on Trevor Story, though. Signing him long term would indicate that they have no faith in either their prospects Lewis or Martin ever being a starting shortstop. And, while I suspect that that's true, I don't want it to be.
I'd rather trade more for another decent starting pitcher and another young shortstop. I'd feel better hoping that some younger players make it big than hope that the Twins can get more than their money's worth out of some older guys. As it is, it'll be really hard to watch Sanó and Sanchez batting near each other in the batting order.

I think it's the difference between having faith that your prospects can be good major league players, and having a player who can anchor your defense and your line up for the next 7-10 years. Baseball has only so many transcendent kids under 25, and it's no shame if you don't have one. But if you don't, you have to look at Story. Hell, even with Bichette at short, the Jays are looking at Story. Although I expect that's basic due diligence, and not that serious.
Oh, I'd take Story, no doubt. I just don't want to pay Colorado Story prices and get On-the-Road Story performance (or worse for years to come). And, believe me, I want Polhad to spend his money on baseball instead of hoarding it. But I suspect rumors of "Twins Looking at Story" will be the typical "well… we made an offer (that was significantly less than every other team "in on him" did).
And I think both Lewis and Martin will become decent players, but probably not shortstops.
Twins Showing Interest In Trevor Story By Steve Adams | March 14, 2022 at 12:15pm CDT
12:15pm: Story has already turned down at least one nine-figure offer from a team that wanted him to change positions, tweets MLB Network’s Jon Heyman. Story’s strong preference has been to remain at shortstop — a desire that the Twins can clearly accommodate if they’re comfortable with Story’s price tag.
I bet this was the Blue Jays, to get Story to play second.
I would not have gone in this direction, but have to think Freeman is about to get really paid.
Braves To Acquire Matt Olson By Steve Adams | March 14, 2022 at 1:16pm CDT
1:16pm: The Braves are trading outfielder Cristian Pache, catcher Shea Langeliers, right-hander Joey Estes and right-hander Ryan Cusick to the A’s in exchange for Olson, Passan tweets.
1:09pm: The Braves and A’s have agreed to a trade that will send first baseman Matt Olson from Oakland to Atlanta, reports ESPN’s Jeff Passan (via Twitter). The forthcoming blockbuster ostensibly serves as a portent for the departure of Braves franchise icon Freddie Freeman, though no formal decision has been reported with regard to Freeman’s decision.
