I'm not a big Stones fan, but you can't help but recognize that he may not have been flashy, but he was solid as a rock. Much like the Beatles, the Stones' music wouldn't have been the same with a different drummer. With Watts, it was all about the song.
RIP, Charlie.

"White drummers don't swing - except for Charlie Watts" - Keith Richards. The man. What a loss. Never flashy, but so much more than simply keeping time.
Keith clearly thinks of Charlie what everybody else thinks of Keith – that he’s the heart and soul of the Rolling Stones personified: “I can never say enough about Charlie Watts,” Keith had told me a couple of weeks before. “It was the luckiest day for this band and myself personally the day that we got to play with such a drummer. With Charlie I never have to worry where the backbeat is. I mean, hey – if you’re talking about rock’n’roll, the drummer is the hidden hero basically.”
Watts was a good spirit throughout... obviously not a proper tribute to his life and legacy, but this was apparently his final "performance" with the Stones last year.
For my part, I'm gonna miss him; the understated calm groove at the back of line for the craziness that was the Rolling Stones. And for the rest of my life, my Stones story will be the same - I'd passed on going to see them in Toronto every time because I didn't think they were worth the exorbitant price of tickets. But on one business trip to London, UK, I discovered they happened to be playing their 50th anniversary show in Hyde Park the week I was there. So, money be damned, I scalped a ticket (still cheaper than most of Toronto's gigs ), stuck around for the weekend (my bosses were always cool like that - he even went when I told him why I was staying) and got to see the Rolling Stones (with Mick Taylor in tow for Midnight Rambler) on a sunny Saturday in Merrie Olde England.
RIP, Charlie, and thanks
Oh, and here's lots of twitter thoughts from people a lot more famous than me on his passing
You were, quite simply, the best of the best. Not only a great drummer, but a wonderful human being. You lived life with grace and humility. You will be greatly missed.
