Just to show how subjective this is, I don't think Carly Simon plays rock and roll, and even if she did play it, I don't think she's had a career worthy of Hall of Fame inclusion.

jason jason jason

take a few moments and compare the stats (albums, singles, awards, total songs written, etc) from carly simon's career to both linda ronstadt's and joni mitchell's career.

remember, carly simon plays and writes just like mitchell (who i adore by the way) and ronstadt (who i also adore) never wrote or played a single thing.

and don't overlook carly simon's oscar.................

Jay Z was dead last on the fan ballot on May 3, but he has been inducted. Renny will be celebrating tonight.

Rock and Roll:
Tina Turner
The Go-Go's
Todd Rundgren
Foo Fighters
Randy Rhoads

The rest are not rock and roll (I'm kind of torn about Kraftwerk). Musicians, to be sure, and deserving of recognition for their work, but in a different HoF. But it is what it is, I don't really care.

Yup, no rock and roll happening here.

Like the Oscars the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is now devoid of meaning to anyone outside the industry it serves.

That's just my personal opinion, of course, but that's why I ignore all these kinds of awards and have done for years.

Fine Billy Preston is included on my list if you insist. I admit I wasn't all that familiar with him.

If I understood this joke of a list correctly online, Kraftwerk (who should've been in eons ago) aren't actually inducted, they are under some sort of 'special influence' category which is bullshit beyond belief.

I'm sure Dave Grohl would be the first to say, "Why the fuck are we in before Iron Maiden???"

There's so much bias against Metal it's obscene.

As for Jay-Z, I like some of his stuff and he belongs in any music hall of fame as does Carole King, but...rock? Um...

This is comedy gold every year.

I always hear how the HOF gets it wrong. I hear this about Oscars, Grammys Golden Globes, etc.
So what I would like to know, which corporate form of recognition gets it right in your book?

Ahhh...yeah. I'm all for putting in one early influence every year, but this list is so big that the artists in the performer category almost seem overshadowed by the number of inductions.

Have to really wonder about the Randy Rhodes thing. They made a graphic for the inductees. They have the "performers" listed first, then the early influences listed second, then the musical excellence artists minus Rhodes listed third, then the businessman listed fourth, and then Rhodes is listed after the businessman instead of with the other musical excellence artists. Not sure if that is meant to be a sleight, or if Sharon blackmailed somebody to get him put on the list at the last minute (probably both).

From a metalhead's perspective, Rhodes in before Judas Priest and Iron Maiden is ridiculous considering the guy only played on two studio albums of note. He was great and all, can't say enough good things about the guy's writing and playing, but it's still 2 studio albums versus artists that have consistently put out good records and sold records over a 40+ year span.

The only thing that makes me happy about this list is that they put Kraftwerk in. I do not own a Kraftwerk recording and probably never will. Despite that, they've been on my "open ballot" (meaning if I could pick anybody, not just the 15 or so artist that are nominated each year) for years. But I figured that a bunch of factors...they being German...they being an odd sort of electronic music outside the mainstream...not having sold many records in the United States...etc...would prevent them from ever being inducted in the "performer" category. So I'm happy to see them get in by this route. Not a fan, but they are 100% deserving.

I will once again suggest that changing the name of the museum in Cleveland to the Pop Music Hall of Fame would right a lot of wrongs, quiet a lot of complaints.

Yes, all of the complaints in this thread and its predecessors would be moot. Really that's clearly what they intend it to be at this point anyway.

And then the debates start all over again about what's "real rock and roll."

It's art, quit trying to pigeonhole and define it.

i pretty much agree, but they have pushed it beyond what, i think, the original intention was.

The original intention of who though? Jann Wenner? Alan Freed?

It’s really not worth the stress. Like Linda says, your personal HoF is on your shelves and that’s all that should matter.
