My 7 year old Samsung blu-ray player died last night. Both Best Buy & Target locally only have in stock the super-cheap models that don't include wi-fi access.

Has anyone here purchased a player from Amazon or can recommend one on their site in the low $100 range that includes wi-fi access? Something easily hooked up with my Samsung smart tv. I watch Primer quite often through the Blu-Ray player.

Thanks in advance.

Most people say the Panasonic’s are the best right now but I have the Sony x800 which I love and it also does SACD/ DVDA which is important to me.

Anything cheaper than those 2 brands would be junk.

I've been thinking lately about getting an after-market blu-ray player that's been modded to play any region
DVD and Blu-ray and convert PAL discs to NTSC and/or use different power plugs and voltages. I'm not
sure if I can do that myself easily through software hacks or if I need to install additional hardware. The
pre-hacked "region free" versions sold on Amazon are all through third party sellers, so there's some risk
in buying one (and they tend to sell for twice the normal price), but it sure would be nice to play any discs.

From what I've read, the Sony UBP-X800 Region Free 4K Blu-ray Player is the best and it has Wi-Fi. So,
it's probably worth look at an region-locked version of that model, which I believe are now the
• Sony UBP-X800M2 (which also can connect to wireless bluetooth speakers)
• Sony UBP-X700 (cheaper, but still around $200, sorry)

Sony BDP-S1700 Streaming Blu-ray Disc Player with 6ft High Speed HDMI Cable

I bought this in 2014, or a model like it. I don't use it much, but when I do, it works - though it occasionally says it needs a software update before I use it, but it automatically does that. No problems so far.
This might be the current model.

It's currently abut $110.

One reviewer says it doesn't have wi-fi.

Quote:
Be warned: If the description does not specify that it has wi-fi built in, then it is the ethernet-only version. The description and product details omit anything about this needing a wired connection. It does not specifically say the unit has wi-fi, but it doesn't specify ethernet either. I don't have a cable long enough to go from my TV to my router, so this unit is unsatisfactory for my uses.

Yeah, no WiFi on that one.

I have this one. The remote won’t work unless it’s within a foot of the player. I bought a new remote and that one wouldn’t work either, so it must be the machine. Meanwhile, my cheap Magnavox BR player works great.

Yeah, my history link took me to the wrong one. I'm not sure why. Probably they don't make this one anymore, or they don't carry it, anyway.

I actually have a BDP-S3200. Wireless LAN built it.

Got it in 2014 - mentions it page 244 on "Look at the cool stuff I got on Amazon." thread.

$86 then.

Only third party sellers for the 2014 model, and they're used.

Closest thing on Amazon that I can find is this:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B075VCYRG4/?tag=imwan-20
Sony BDP-S3700 Region Free Blu-ray Player, Multi Region Smart WiFi 110-240 Volts, 6FT HDMI Cable & Dynastar Plug Adapter Bundle Package

Region free, eh? Smart Wi-Fi. But it's $160.

Even new models are hard to get right now. Hope they don't stop making universal Blu-ray players.

This one was out of stock at Best Buy, where it was priced at $79. They said they would try to get more next weekend of either this model or the Sony S6700, which was also out of stock.

I bought this online from Best Buy. With added warranty, still less than half the same deal with tax at Amazon. .

It does not include the Amazon Prime app nor can it be added. But I did find a way to connect my TV to the net and get Prime. The remote options aren't as varied as I'd like but better than nothing.

Haven't tried another region blu-ray yet.

I think if you got it from Best Buy, then it's not a region-free version, so it should have been about half the
price. I don't think Best Buy can legally sell the "after-market" conversions, and the people who convert the
base models tend to charge 200% of the base model's price. So half price seems the right price.

But I'd be keen to learn that I was wrong and that we could get a region-free version for cheap.

Sony Blu ray players with wifi have been available sub $100 for some time. I have two and they have been great. I have an older Pansonic one. It's fine, but the remote is awkward - you have to go to a Panasonic menu to select the disc menu option. Really odd.
