I haven't done any shameless self-promotion for my blog here in quite some time, mostly because various factors have kept me from posting for more than a year. Since I miss the music conversations my posts generated I've decided to recycle previously-written content about my favorite debut albums in a new weekly series I'm calling "Satur-debut." I couldn't think of a better starting point than the first album by LED ZEPPELIN, which turns 50 this month. For anyone who's interested, here's a link to that post:

It's a great one. Their first four were great. After that, they were good, very good (except for "In Through The Out Door").

I love them all, including ITTOD. I've always enjoyed how no two albums sound alike.

My favorite Zep album at the moment

Mighty mighty Zep, there really will never be another band like them.

My least favorite Zep, but only because there are a few typical late 60’s Blues yawners.

Overall, an excellent album made incredibly quick and filled with brilliant playing.

Page’s production is the most impressive aspect.

I do knock it a few pegs for quite a few “borrowed” ideas.

2/14/75: Me and Jimmy at Nassau Coliseum. Magical and mystical. I remember thinking that I could not believe I was in the same “room” as them. I have endless love for the Beatles, but I didn’t grow up wishing I could play like George Harrison. Every recorded note Jimmy Page ever played with Zeppelin resonated with me. This was how it’s done I thought. Just look at the way he stands on the stage. The violin bow, the double neck Gibson. Seen hundreds of concerts, but nothing ever topped that. 50 years and that first album still rocks.

Rock and Roll, Sick Again, Over the Hills and Far Away, In My Time of Dying, Since I've Been Loving You, The Song Remains the Same, Rain Song, Kashmir, No Quarter, Trampled Underfoot, Moby Dick, Dazed and Confused (incl. San Francisco), Stairway to Heaven, Whole Lotta Love, Black Dog, (If You Can't Rock Me intro) Heartbreaker.

Saw Page and Plant tour and Page with the Black Crowes and loved them. Only let down show for me was the ARMS concert where Page’s guitar was way out of tune. I went both nights anyway. Jeff Beck stole the show.

My favorites are always changing and the debut is often at the top of my list.

Couldn't agree more with your "mighty mighty" assessment. They've been my favorite band for 40 years and I still discover things on their records that surprise & amaze me.

My Zeppelin favorites are constantly changing, so they're essentially all my favorites. They had such a sense of dynamics right from the start, which is especially impressive when you think that Plant & Bonham were only 20-21 when the debut was recorded.

I will always be envious of anyone who got to see Zeppelin. Glad you & Jimbo got to experience them together. I was 14 when Bonham died, and would have seen them on the '80 US tour had that not happened. I saw Page at the ARMS benefit show at the Garden in '83. I had that same feeling of "I can't believe I'm in the same room as him." Also saw Plant's first solo tour (and a couple of times after that), Page on the Outrider tour at The Ritz in NYC, and John Paul Jones on both of his solo tours (once opening for King Crimson).

I also got into a screening of the Zeppelin DVD prior to its release, with Plant, Page & Jones doing a brief intro & then sitting in the theater with us. I loved JPJ's comment about how excited he was to finally watch Zeppelin in concert.

Also saw them a few years later at MSG following the Presence album. Stunning as well! Pete Townsend was three rows behind me. Milling around outside The Garden before the show that afternoon was an historically unmatched number and quality of “freaks”, groupies and air guitarists. (Meant as compliments)

Ah....”where have all the good times gone?”

I love being the age that I am (52) but that means I missed out on seeing some of my favorite bands, either completely (Zeppelin) or in their '70s prime (Pink Floyd, The Who, Yes).

I am 65 and I missed out on some favs also - Hank Williams, Eddie Cochran, Buddy Holly and Johnny Horton.

Oh yeah, Beck was great at the ARMS show! Wow, that was a while ago.

So much more than just really fast notes on a fretboard. He feels the whole guitar like it is a part of his own body. Makes it talk. Finds harmonics where they don’t exist. Right hand controls half the feel, or more. Whammy genius. Jeff Beck’s Guitar Shop?.....He’s a walking guitar shop!

This was an incredible album; it's not my favourite of there's (that's probably IV, for all it's overplayed-ness), but that might be because by the time I got exposed to the material on this album, they were already LED ZEPPELIN. Since it was already classic rock by the time I started listening to music, it wasn't anywhere near as impactful for me as some other albums which you may or may not get to.

Would have loved to see Hank &/or Buddy. My two favorite '50s performers.

I saw Beck at the ARMS Benefit show and on his Guitar Shop tour, which was a dual headline concert with Stevie Ray Vaughan. As great as Beck was...and he was amazing as always...SRV was on another level that night. I had seen him in '86 when he was still under the influence, but I couldn't believe how much better he was just a few years later after cleaning up.

When I got into Zeppelin (in 1979, the year I turned 13), their entire discography was waiting for me. It was so much fun to dig into all of it at once, even though at first I didn't realize that songs like "Immigrant Song" and "Hot Dog" were from different albums. I quickly learned the nuances of every album and they've been inspiring me ever since. Can't imagine what it would have been like to experience Zeppelin right from the start, and follow each each album as they were released.

Another great debut. The only bad word that I can say about it, and it's not much of one, is that I wish they'd used the version of "Hey Joe" that in the purple box instead of the one included here.
