His music may not have been for everyone, but it was his expression and he found quite a few fans.

Sad to read, RIP Daniel. Kind of modern day troubadour.

Always loved his outsider brand of music and picked up any album of his that I didn't have. An acquired taste i suppose but one i deeply enjoyed

The Devil and Daniel Johnston documentary is a must see for any music fan.

Late Great Daniel Johnston: Discovered Covered is a great comp for the uninitiated. Disc 1 is covers of his songs from a variety of artists, Disc 2 is his renditions of his songs.

RIP

I was in Sound Exchange here in Austin (the record store that first sported his famous "Hi, How are you?" painting on the outside wall) back in the 80's, and Daniel walked up to me and handed me a cassette. He was completely unknown at that point. As a big progressive rock fan and electronic music composer who was recording in a professional recording studio at the time, his extremely lo-fi music did not make a good impression on me. Got to give him credit, though, he became quite famous. RIP
