Many artists decide to do a self titled album several albums in that sometimes represents a fresh start for the band. Sometimes the s/t falls flat on it's face, sometimes it's one of the bands or artists' best. Which falls into which category for you? (Debut self titled albums don't count)

One of the best
Beatles
Metallica

Terrible
King's X
Deftones

Only okay
Alice in Chains

I've always loved Oingo Boingo's 1994 album "Boingo." It was indeed intended as a fresh start, although it ended up being their final studio album. Still, an incredible, epic note on which for them to go out.

How would folks here rate all of the self-titled Chicago albums?

And I'm not sure McCartney II would qualify as II is part of the title.

This is my favourite Oingo Boingo album. You can hear how the work Elfman and Bartek had done for soundtracks in the years between this and the previous Oingo albums really enriched the music. "Change" is amazing.

Actually, this does qualify -- this was not Harrison's solo debut.

Yes, a few of Renny's choices do fit the criteria, which is why I said "many" don't qualify. The Harrison (which Linda mentioned up thread), CSN's boat, probably the Chicago albums.

Favorite self-titled not debut.................

The Velvet Underground (3rd album)
The Band - already mentioned
Grateful Dead (7th album......known as Skull & Roses)
Cheap Trick (1997) - already mentioned
Television (3rd album)

Not good (I'm not counting numbered titled albums as self-titled)

Dylan (1973) - though it does have some charm to it.

Not sure if this falls into the worst or best category. I felt it was fairly good.

Stone Temple Pilots have two self-titled albums: one released in 2010 and one released in 2018. I was surprised by how good the most recent self-titled album was, especially since it's their first album with a new singer. It actually ended up being one of my top albums of 2018.

Any one of the first four tracks would be enough to single-handedly put it in the "best" category.
