Looking at the titles involved, there's a good chance that it's not selling for this price. Most of the titles look like crap to me.

looking at that list (i did scan it very quickly) it reminds me of the $1 (or less) bins i see in stores all the time. we call them dump bins.

i'd venture to say that if this person traded these in they would get around 50 cents of less per disc.

If this were Jimbo's CD collection, I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

On the other hand, if this were Jimbo's CD collection, I wouldn't be able to afford it.

This also reminds me of when the CD was new (and selling for above $10 each) and we thought it was a music investment. 3000 CDs x 10 is $30,000 dollars, wow!

Does anybody remember when "alpha by artist" meant alphabetical by last name, not first name--and groups such as "The Beatles" were filed under "B", not "T"?

I recall that, once, the world made sense.

That was some time ago, now...but I do remember it. ;)

And it does make you wonder, what is the monetary value of such a collection?

well john, THAT truly is the $64,000 question.

my friend and i discuss this quite often, i even have about 40 CD's in a separate pile that i want to sell on ebay because i know i will never get true value in trade.

you almost have to piece-meal out a collection these days, and you would have to research each and every CD (unless of course they are gold, targets, imports w/obi w/out obi etc) which would take quite some time when talking 1000's of CD's. like the collection in the original post above, one can see it has been thoroughly cleaned out of anything worth anything.

than you would have to take all the CD's you have with any value and either try the ebay. discogs, craiglist or whatever route, or take them to a store with full disclosure to the store that you know what they are worth and you would have to have a number in mind of just how low you would go. if you say no, you must realize that you may have to sit on them for a long time in order to get what you want. and selling CD's on the internet is not an easy task: packaging, shipping, disgruntled buyers, many many trips to the post office, non=payers etc.

the common stuff, well, offer them to a store for $1.00 each, but be prepared to be offered a quarter or even a dime each. which right now, i would take, or again, be prepared to sit on them for a long time.

I put post-its on the CDs I know are of value. I told my boyfriend that, if I die first, to be sure to pull those out and sell separately before selling the majority of the collection.

I think to people like us, it would be considerable, taking into effect the collectible and rare CDs he had.

Technically his collection has plenty of commercially available recordings that any of us could have bought at the time but the real strength is the "promo's" he had in the collection. He was the Promo King because of all the shopping at the indies in Manhattan for all those years during the golden era of the CD.
I would think most of those are very rare and were only given out to record company execs/ employees and then secretly dumped at the indies (which basically don't exist anymore).

All those late 70's into the early 00's record/ CD promo's must be something else. But how do you put a price on those items?

You know what has even less resale value? Digital movies and music "purchased" from online download and streaming services.

My CD collection is similar and from the same sources (though not quite as large) - but I also still have all my LPs and a few thousand 45s.

I believe you guys perused the same stores during that golden era.

A thought just occurred to me: Is Jimbo's legendary collection being taken care of? Sorry if I missed this in another thread, but, well...it's pretty famous, even if relatively few people have actually seen it.

After losing my house and family recently I have considered selling my 4000 odd CDs and buy a house in China.
I am painstakingly checking every FLAC file of every CD I ripped and adding cover art etc to every track.
This will probably take years.
Then I will consider selling them.
I will never sell them as a bulk lot as this is a good way to lose money
