Hussongs Cantina in Ensenada. Had to sneak back in to get my boombox!
This is the night Jimmy became a Stones maniac! I was in seat 9. It was pure Rock God magic. My dad had made a connection with a NYC ticket broker when he moved to New York shortly after his time as a Marine in WWII. Hadn’t spoken to him for years but Jimmy begged Dad to give him a call. Then came the discussion between Dad and Mom about spending crazy money for tickets to a Rock concert. ($50 per) Mom gave him the nod of approval. Even during the summer word spread about this to me and Jimmy’s friends. They all thought our parents were rich hippies. Ah......nope. Till the end, me and Jimmy talked about that being the night the fanaticism started. Our favorite single day we shared with each other. There were many more to come.

Jim was my hero for many reasons growing up, but the biggest reason was that when he planned out something great it always included me. And since he was older and crazy trustworthy my mom would always approve of me going with him. Another big perk we inherited by living on the Island was that my Mom who was head of book production for Elsevier (huge publishing firm with NYC branch) would get tickets from her vendors for sporting events. Jets, Mets and many Islander games in the late ‘70s including playoffs.
One day in ‘77 at the dining room table, after dinner, Mom asked if me and Jimmy wanted tickets she had been given for the audience of a “new tv show”. She hands the envelope to Jimmy who opens it and looks inside. Two tickets for that weekends broadcast of “Saturday Night Live”. By this time it was understood that I’d get to go with Jim to all the cool stuff.
It was Bill Murray’s first show, the first Coneheads, Ralph Nader hosting and George Benson was the musical guest. He played “Masquerade” and “Gonna Love You More.”
So many cherished memories.

Wow, what a memory! So jealous am I.
My best friend from H.S. worked at Frito Lay and a sales guy would visit the facility who was able to provide great tickets for MSG concerts. This was from 1972 thru '75. Saw so many great great bands.
Man, I hated it when my buddy quit Frito and lost that contact.

Jimmy’s friend Gary Brown was kind of a more ruff and tumble guy than any of his other buddies. In the beginning of 1975 he was actually staying at our house cause his parents had kicked him out. At dinner he says “guess where I just was”. Jim says “no telling”. “Over at The Coliseum” he says. We still have no clue. Then he pulls out something that looks like this:
He hands it to Jimmy who pulls out three of these:
Then he tells us about how he immediately ran to get in a line like this when he heard Zeppelin tickets were about to go on sale:
Instead of asking another one of their friends to go Jimmy guilted him into giving the third ticket to me. “After all you are staying here for free!”, Jim deftly reminded him. It was three singles. But that let me sneak up front by myself. Security didn’t seem to care about a scrawny 14 year old. Never felt more in the presence (pun intended) of metaphysical greatness before or since than when I was in the room ten feet away from the mighty boys from Zeppelin.

6 years ago this happened up in Beantown. 6 years!!
We were seeing The Eagles that night and spent the afternoon hanging around Foxboro enjoying the sights. Especially red headed sights.
I swear, JohnG looks more like Joe Scarborough everyday. And that redhead waitress, God what a beauty. I would have made a fool of myself in front of her.
We are down at the Beach this morning at Tobay and couldn’t help think of how much Jimbo enjoyed the water whether it was a pool or the ocean. When we would take a trip he would always say, will there be a pool?
And here is our view today, stunning day on Long Island, why we all live here.

I took that photo of Jim at the end of a wave on a beautiful day at Jones Beach. One of our hundreds of visits to that wonderful beach, which is a state park. Every time we were there together we would body surf or boogie board. No matter what the water temp may have been. This we learned right there from “Ed” our Dad. JIMMY LOVED THAT BEACH!
Jim and a few of his favorite things. Niece, nephew, waves and Stones T-shirt! (Just noticed, that shirt is from a show I went to in Philly)

Jones Beach was the place where my wife and I first met Jimbo in person. Of course he messaged me prior: "I'll be in a Stones shirt." It was a concert, B-52's, Go-Go's, Psychedelic Furs. We got to witness Jim doing a full-on Rock Lobster dance.
Years later, after he passed, I wrote a short story called JIMBO. It took place at Jones Beach.
I also first met Jimbo in person at a Jones Beach concert, I think it was Midnight Oil. We had known each other on the ICE magazine board and became fast friends. I can remember telling some of my cop buddies that I had met a few music pals on the internet (DanO is one of them along with Bill L) and they thought I was nuts.
Us old ICEers have really stuck together through the years!
