Not sure if I can get it repaired. Oppo's website states they likely can't repair issues caused by power surges. I'm guessing the power supply is fried. GRRRR. I have special firmware that can't be replaced. Of all my Electronics, it had to be the Oppo.

That sucks. Don't you have it plugged into a surge protector? The good ones will cover repair/replacement.

Oppo's site says the flat-rate repair service does not cover power surges, but I can't find anything that says they won't do a repair on a player that has power surge damage. You need to contact them.

Yes. A $150 Adcom. Unfortunately it's 3 pin outlets bypass much of the protection, & the Oppo is 3 pin.

It's on my list for tomorrow's phone calls. I am still hoping to find someone locally, but there are very few digital audio repair folks left in the Seattle area.

Their used to be a guy who did mods about 200 miles rom here, but I can't find him on the net.

I did see the website note about power outages. Not a good sign, as the Oppo is one big computer.

I'm assuming my insurance won't cover this.....

Funny, what I was worried about was $100 or so in food going bad. It's all fine. The only thing that died was the Oppo & it was on a $150 power conditioner......... MY $3k+ cd player was on the same Adcom & it's fine.......... (3 pin also)

I guess I can look at it as an opportunity to play old favorites that haven't been released in hi-res. Other than the box below, I have a teeny physical cd backlog, but still several thousand cd's. I do kinda miss the days when I'd be in the mood for something & just play it, rather than going through my huge to be played pile somewhat in order. One way or the other, I have to get the Oppo situation resolved, as I've sold many cd's & replaced with formats that I can currently play only on my pc & in some cases my phone.

I can't currently play blu at all (same thing, replaced lots of dvd's including with Region B), SACD's sound mediocre & DVD's look mediocre on my Pioneer.

I got a hold of several photos of the inside. I don't see any fuse. Oppo's charging $119 + 1 way shipping so I'm going to go that route. I hope my blu-ray region free board wasn't damaged.

I'm sure you will find someone in Seattle who can fix it.
I had a similar problem with a tv years ago and my power company paid for it to be fixed

There really seems to be no one left here who does digital high end audio. This is the 3rd time I've tried to find someone in the last couple years. The last guy I knew of got really sick & retired. The last person who worked on my Esoteric cd transport had it 3 times, & a couple things still don't work well. I found one store about 60 miles away that thought they could handle it; but wanted $150 just to diagnose.

I've already paid Oppo. I just hope my region free hardware circuit board didn't fry (& doesn't somehow hurt the unit after repair); Oppo does not to deal with that (understandably). It's an external USB plug in, so I won't be sending that board to them.

Grand total for the outgoing shipping to Oppo, repair & replacement region free circuit board was $347. Problem was a blown power circuit board.

Ironically the most expensive part was shipping from me to Oppo by UPS $145.

Breakdown:
UPS: $145
Repair AND return shipping $119
Replacement region free board (2 techs told me not to risk plugging the old one back in) $83

I will NEVER use UPS again. $145 is a major rip off (15 pounds + packing it)

The unit should be here Wednesday if the signature required doesn't cross me up.

Not sure when the region free board will arrive, but I can go a week or 2 without playing UK blu & dvd's.

$347 later I got the Oppo back as it was. Scary how dependent I am on that thing. I don't know of any other player that does hi-res music in all formats (other than DSD Which the 205 does, but it doesn't do iso's which I have a ton of), & region free blu AND dvd all in 1 unit.

While I really would have liked a telephone option, the actual cs & repair was awesome: $119 including return shipping, they heard me & did not replace the firmware as I requested, 1 week total turnaround (back in my hands) & everything works perfectly).

I just can't believe they felt their is no longer a market for their players; especially with how quick the 205's sold out.

I don't think that's true. Oppo has always been a Chinese company and, to my knowledge, has always been part of BBK Electronics Corporation. I don't think it's ever been sold or had some private equity investors come and and re-shape the company.

Oppo is a big enough company where they no longer want to waste time and resources selling what is projected to be a niche product 10 years down the road. And yes, chances are much better than 50/50 that anything that plays any type of physical media will firmly be a niche product in the near future. Doesn't make sense for a big company like that to invest in a product where the entire market will probably only be <10% of households, while just about 100% of the population under the age of 30 absolutely needs to have their head buried in a cellphone for an required minimum of 4 hours each and every day.

While I think some big companies like Sony will stay in the Blu-ray player market (especially since it's their technology), in a few years from now it's probably likely that they will ditch any attempt they might make at a higher end model and just go down to a couple cheap models. I think most other big companies will end up bailing on this market altogether. Consumers will have to rely on niche companies to fill this niche market, like Marantz. There still will be good, quality products out there. The consumer will just have to be willing to pay a big more for that product.

Excellent explanation. According to BB sales person OPPO may return to production once the chip issue is resolved. Will see. As good as my two OPPO's I have are I am sure the will outlive me.

So true, so sad and an accurate observation.

I'd be surprised if Oppo Digital resumes business. The timing of it just seemed odd. They had just put two new players on the market, so if chip costs were an issue it would seem more likely that they would have just downsized R&D since the next generation of players were a couple years away. And if current chip costs where a problem, why did they do that last run of 205's at the same retail price? From the various statements made public, it sure seems like Oppo dismantled everything to do with Oppo Digital other than the support/customer service aspect. I don't see them getting back into this game.

I don't know how the patent aspect of this business works but I'm assuming Oppo has various patents associated with their hardware (players, headphones, amps). I was hoping that we'd have some news about another company buying that technology and then continue to make these (and next generation) players. Haven't heard anything yet. Maybe Oppo is holding onto these in case they do get back into the game? Again, I just don't see it. I have little doubt that another company will quickly jump into this "player that will play everything and has some solid quality behind it" market but don't see them matching the quality/price combination that Oppo had. I mentioned Marantz above but that was a poor suggestion as I think they are audio only. Yamaha seems to have backed off the player market over that last few years, but this could be the type of hole in the market that could get them back in with the motivation being as "support" for their receiver/speaker market.

Once again observations and analysis. Let's keep our fingers crossed OPPO decides to continue. There's plenty of time until next release.

If that is a true statement then there is a chance. Hard to walk away from something when you are a #1 in the market.
