Some reissue labels that I miss:

Line: German label strong on the golden age of rock'n'roll and pop. Had good sound.
One Way: American label strong on 70's and 80's rock. Also gave us Gary Usher and Jan and Dean.
Relic: American label specializing in rare doo-wop. Lousy cover designs, but good sound.
Razor&Tie: American label. Yes, they're still around, but the reissue department is now almost non-existant. Did score the cool soundtrack to "Blacula" from them.
DCC: American audiophile label spearheaded by Steve Hoffman. Perhaps the saddest loss of all. Apart from the gold discs, they also did affordable regular CD reissues of acts like Ray Charles, Leon Russell, and Freddie King. Not that many obscurities from that label, though.
Mobile Fidelity: The old American audiophile label, not the one doing SACD's today. I never got the gold "River Deep, Mountain High", and it doesn't turn up on the second-hand market.

I have Barclay James harvest two-fer on one Way records, and the Washington Squares complete discography on Razor and Tie. Two great reissues.

I disagree on Line having good sound. I got several from them with mediocre sound at best, some of the Ian Matthews releases they did were possibly the worst sounding cd's I ever heard. They did have some great titles though.

Well, I've only got some Big Star and a bit of Del Shannon from Line, and they sound all right. I might upgrade them, though.

Razor & Tie was great. Not only did they reissue some groovy titles--from Graham Parker to John Stewart to Tom Robinson to Sweet to Marilyn McCoo & Billy Davis Jr.--but they also compiled best-of's for some unlikely artists, including Nick Gilder, John Butcher Axis, and Franke & the Knockouts.

Yeah, who else would ever think of doing Marilyn McCoo & Billy Davis Jr.? Was it only their Cliff Richard comp that was remastered by Steve Hoffman, or were there others?

I do miss One Way, although my understanding is that Wounded Bird are some of the same folks. From a business point of view, One Way was a cutout wholesaler before they became a reissue label; they shut down the wholesale dept at the same time as the label. I really miss their wholesale division, they had some incredible deals in the day.

That's probably true, because Wounded Bird are doing some of the same sort of reissues as One Way did.

I don't get what you mean by this. Are you saying that they've lost their way, or that they're a different entity using the same name?

Because I know the latter to be untrue.

FWIW, my late aunt was MFSL's VP/CFO from the mid '80s until her death in 1992, so I have a fair amount of their stuff from that period.

Well, it is true. Another company bought out MFSL and has been issuing SACDs and gold discs for the last few years. But it is NOT the old MFSL, to be sure. :D

There's a big difference between being under new management and being a different company. They're still selling the gold CDs like they've been doing for nearly 20 years, but it's no surprise that new releases of those have dried up, as the labels are seeing a market for reissues themselves, especially with bonus tracks, too, but also with audiophile/SACD versions. Whether they do this on the original labels, or on a corporate-owned niche reissue label, like Rhino or Hip-O, they're keeping what was MFSL and DCC's bread and butter to themselves.

Whatever is the truth behind MFSL, I prefer their old gold CD's to their SACD's, because I don't own the hardware to enjoy SACD. SACD is a dying format, let's face it.

No-one seems to bemoan the demise of the UK reissue label, See For Miles. As I understand, their sound wasn't always up to snuff, and a lot of those tracks on their EP collections could be found elsewhere, but they WERE the first label to reissue The Flys, don't ever forget that!
