Quote: Guitarist known as J. Geils found dead in Massachusetts home
5 Investigates has learned John Warren Geils Jr., the artist known professionally as J. Geils and part of the rock group The J. Geils Band, was found dead in his Groton, Massachusetts home.
He was 71.
Geils and the band are best known for their album, "Freeze Frame" and the song "Centerfold," which hit No. 1 for six weeks.
Geils formed the band during his time at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, where he studied mechanical engineering.
At Worcester, he formed J. Geils Blues Band with Danny Klein, Magic Dick Salwitz, Stephen Jo Bladd, and Peter Wolf, with Seth Justman becoming the last member before the band released its debut album in 1970.
The J. Geils Band was influenced by soul music and rhythm and blues, but it moved toward pop and rock by the time the album "Love Stinks" came out in 1980.
After 11 albums, the band's 12th album, "Freeze Frame," hit No. 1 on the Billboard charts for four weeks in 1981 and remained on the chart for 70 weeks. The title track "Freeze Frame" made it to No. 4.
While on tour, opening acts for the band included the Eagles, Billy Joel, ZZ Top and U2.
The band broke up a few years later.
Geils has called Groton his home for 35 years. http://www.wcvb.com/article/guitarist-k ... me/9263211

This is awful news. J. Geils was the first big name band I ever saw. I slept overnight in the rain for tickets to a show at the University of New Hampshire. The night of the concert, it was snowing like a bastard and the band cooked. It was the show that made me a live music fanatic. I saw them again in the 90s after they re-grouped, and they were just as good.
So sad.

Back in 1990 I found one of these in a closet at my high school and I hung it up in the senior lounge. RIP.

Damn, sad news.
J. Geils Band was one of those acts that had been chugging along pretty successfully for years and then suddenly exploded with one hit album. Love Stinks is still my favorite.

My buddy just showed me the news here at the John 5 show. Stunned is an appropriate word. J. Geils was heavy rotation for me in the 80s. I found them with "Love Stinks" and of course the big album, but I came to like a lot of their stuff. I saw the Freeze Frame tour, and the live album from that tour is one of my favorites. Love that version of "Sanctuary".
Damn, we're getting old.
RIP.

These are becoming much too frequent...one of the only great things to come out of Boston. Lots of great tunes - my favorite - No Anchovies Please.
RIP - thanks for the music.

I saw them at MSG in Feb. '82 when they were really peaking after Freeze Frame. I remember Peter Wolf dancing on stage before they were introduced, as they were walking out, and not stopping throughout the entire show. Magic Dick blowing the harp. J. Geils himself was very subdued the whole time. I have been lucky enough to see a lot of bands at the top of their heyday but this was in that narrow window of explosion. Electric!

A couple of my reference books say his given name was Jerome. Lead story above says John. Anybody have absolute confirmation either way?

Jimbo wrote: A couple of my reference books say his given name was Jerome. Lead story above says John. Anybody have absolute confirmation either way? His given name was John. He ended up using Jay because so many people called him that (as in "J." Geils). Jerome was a nickname that Peter Wolf sometimes called him during concerts, mistaken for real by a Rolling Stone writer, and it became apocryphal.

R.I.P.
Another great band with two very separate eras.
Most casual fans only know them for their 80s hits, but these guys had loads of hits in the 70s and were one of the greatest live bands ever.
What a bummer.
