2019 Baseball Hall of Fame ballot: Mariano Rivera, Roy Halladay among top newcomers

The Baseball Hall of Fame announced its full 2019 ballot, headlined by newcomers in Mariano Rivera and Roy Halladay.

Rivera, baseball's all-time saves leader with 652, is expected to be voted in on the first ballot. Halladay, who died in 2017, was a two-time Cy Young winner who could also receive the required 75% of the vote in his first year.

Other notable first-timers include pitcher Andy Pettitte and first baseman Todd Helton.

Edgar Martinez, in his 10th and final year on the ballot, is primed to be voted in this year as he received 70.4% of the vote in 2018. Pitcher Mike Mussina's vote share has gone up in each of his first five years on the ballot, reaching 63.5% last year.

Barry Bonds (56.4%) and Roger Clemens (57.3%) are in their seventh year on the ballot and have trended upwards in recent years, but will find it difficult to garner the necessary votes in the coming years.

Here's the full 35-player 2019 ballot in alphabetical order:

Mariano Rivera should go in along with Edgar Martinez as he could never get him out. Mike Mussina and Roy Halladay also.

I'm a lifelong (and long-suffering) Mets fan who hates the Yankees nearly as much as I love the Mets. I will rarely say anything positive about the team from the Bronx, but this is one exception: If Mariano Rivera doesn't get inducted with 100% of the vote (which I know has never happened) then there is something seriously wrong with the induction process.

At every other position you could argue about multiple players being the best of all time, but when it comes to relief pitchers it's clearly Mariano and then a bunch of guys in the distance at #2.

Okay, I'll go back to hating everything else about them, but happy I got that off my chest.

the important part of your quote ;-)

I agree that Mariano should be a 100% first ballot hall of famer, but he won't be. Somewhere, there is a couple of writers who categorically refuse to vote for anyone on the first ballot. I mean, 3 people didn't vote for Ken Griffey Junior. It's dumb, but it isn't likely to change.

I expect Edgar, Mo, and Doc to go in. If Doc were still with us, he probably wouldn't, but I expect enough writers don't play the waiting game that he gets in first time. Plus, that way, baseball won't have to revisit the tragedy every year as part of the run up to induction, and allows the family to close out this chapter of their lives. Maybe, please, baseball writers can do the right thing here, and just put him in?

I expect Mussina will go in next year with Jeter; a lot of writers will hold someone back since they won't want Jeter to go in alone, and they won't want Roy's induction bringing down the mood by being the only other inductee. Hence, Roy this year, Moose, Jeter, and maybe Schilling next.

In looking ahead, though, there is no first ballot Hall of Famer in 2021 (maybe no HoF'er at all- Aramis Ramirez, Mark Beurhle, Torii Hunter and Tim Hudson lead the class), so they may hold Schilling back, and put him in with Sheffield in their final year of eligibility.

P.S. I was just thinking it was time for the 2019 thread to start.

The Yanks have traded for the Mariners lefty James Paxton. They traded Justus Sheffield, Eric Swanson and AA outfielder Don Thompsom-Williams

This is a really good deal for both teams. Gonna hate seeing Paxton 4-5 times a year, for all that he's a good Canadian boy.

In this case, the evil empire would have to be the Mariners. They just took 135 million dollars in public money for stadium renovations. Almost two months later to the day, the team turns around and trades their best pitcher and moves his approximate 9 million dollar salary off the books. Congrats citizens of King County, you just got screwed.

Trading Paxton was unfortunate. The Mariner’s wouldn’t have to trade their assets if they weren’t paying Cano and Hernandez $51 million.

The Mariners local cable deal earns them $76 million a year.
National money is $1.5 billion divided by 30 teams, and going up with the new Fox deal.
I don’t think the Mariners are going broke.

Boy, the Yankees like older pitchers.

Is Paxton old? I think he's 30.

He is. That's not old for old farts like you and me, but in sports it's the beginning of the end, or at least the beginning of the slide to mediocrity.

He has 2 more years of control. I'm not sure they will keep him after that.
