I just finished reading a story about Disney negotiating with Carrie Fisher's estate to bring her back for another Star Wars movie via digital and other tricks.

The article also states that in the most recent movie, Peter Cushing was "brought back" via the same methods.

The whole premise is weird and ghoulish to me. It makes Barry Manilow and his album with dead people seem almost tame. Almost.

Your opinions?

Hire a different actor. The Bond franchise has been successful with 6 different actors playing Bond. If there is a good script and a quality actor is substituted the public will buy it.

EDIT : Throw that last sentence out the window. Should have said if there are a lot of sh*tty looking but dramatic CGI special effect scenes plus a couple of good looking people (not necessarily good actors) in the film the public will buy it.

Maybe Universal can bring back Boris and Bela and Lon. I would also love a new Marx Brothers movie.

HAHAHA I second everything that you've said. "Harpo vs. Vader" would be an instant classic.

Sometimes an actor becomes so identified with a part that the public won't accept it. I don't know if that would be the case here. It would be more fitting to just write her out in the beginning of the next film. Have her killed in battle or something like that. She wouldn't even have to be seen on the screen.

I have no problem with the practice.

I expect the problem is Episode IX would likely have been the payoff of the mama's boy redemption and / or death story with Kylo Ren. Without Princess Leia in the movie, there's no emotional through line for that arc, and I don't think it would work as well with Luke. Without Carrie Fisher there, they do have a significant plotting and scripting issue on their hands, especially with Episode VIII in the can and no doubt pointed at the climax of this trilogy already. It's going to take either a major pivot of the entire story, some technology magic putting Leia on screen, or some combination of the two to make Episode IX work at all. As for recasting, this is arguably the most iconic female role of the last 40 years in film. That's a tough ask.

If it wasn't Disney, I'd probably sympathize more.

Not just movies. There'll be a new Who album some day with Townshend and Daltrey backed by computer recreations of Entwistle and Moon.

Well, Lucasfilm has made an official statement to squash this particular rumor.

Quote:
We don’t normally respond to fan or press speculation, but there is a rumor circulating that we would like to address. We want to assure our fans that Lucasfilm has no plans to digitally recreate Carrie Fisher’s performance as Princess or General Leia Organa.

Carrie Fisher was, is, and always will be a part of the Lucasfilm family. She was our princess, our general, and more importantly, our friend. We are still hurting from her loss. We cherish her memory and legacy as Princess Leia, and will always strive to honor everything she gave to Star Wars.

I think it feels too soon for something like that to be done here, but have no problem with the practice in cases like Rogue One, and even Furious 7, where they wanted to do something special for Paul Walker, who had been in most of the movie already and died before it was finished.
