in light of recent posts in different threads i got to thinking on this snowy cold afternoon in ohio.

am i really the "old man" around here?

i am 64 years and 2 months and 2 days today.

does that make me the oldest member?

i am the oldest teacher on our staff, by about a year and a half.

of course you don't have to answer if you don't want to

Sadly (for me, that is), I am both older and and, if my wife is to be believed, more crotchety as well.

don't know about you guys but for me, growing up I heard Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis and Johnny Horton on the radio. Watched Sgt Bilko, Car 54, reruns of the Honeymooners and Amos n Andy. Have vivid memories of the Yankees in the world series each year ( when we lost to the Cards it was we'll get them next year).
I remember the Beatles on Ed Sullivan like it was yesterday...the British Invasion...discovered Frank Zappa in 67.

to me I grew up in the best times...you could go anywhere and not worry about things...no cell phones to track you...go out in the morning and come home late. Most ball games were played in the afternoon especially the World Series.

the 60's and 70's were the best of times...i am 63 now but I wouldn't trade my timing with anyone. I hope to hang on a lot longer however.

The kids at school think I'm 34-37 and I just tell them, "Yeah, I'll take that."

They have no clue sadly.

You know Robert, each generation says that their times were the best. But my Mom did say that the 60's while turbulent was the most exciting decade she ever experienced.

And everything you said I agree with completely, including the memories. TV shifting to color, the AFL being formed, Baseball being absolutely great and not being diluted as it is today.

Cell phones with the tracking but the disconnect of the "real time" non-planned experience.

I wouldn't have traded those times for anything. I know all the younger generation(s) keep saying but you didn't have computers and the video games like we have today, and I simply respond with one word "Exactly".

Watching TV is better these days, more selection and time shifting eliminates muddling through commercials and watching when we want to watch.

But I agree, the old days were a lot of fun. My parents never knew where I was half of the time and it was never a big deal.

I am 56 right now, a big age but I don't feel it.

IMO, the TV experience is better because of the technology but not the content. I loved that TV shows were using film in the past and like everything else because of so much dilution we have what we have.

I loved riding bikes w/o helmets and didn't have to report in all the time (because of no phones). Like John says my parents never knew where I was either but luckily nothing ever happened (or if it did, they didn't know).

Maybe I will play some of the original Johnny Weissmuller "Tarzan" flicks tonight that are not PC and provide the finger salute to anyone who has an issue with it.

Now I am "the crotchety old man" (and proud of it).

For me, music played a huge part on how I remember the times. The late 70's (Aerosmith, Nugent, Kiss, etc). Then the lull before Motley, QR and the Priest made headway. Then music kinda sucked from 85 to 77. Then the hair metal came along.... and Metallica got huge. Then the 90s came along and music took a huge shit until the 80s bands decided to do it again and keep touring (to this day).

That's my condensed version.

Renny...you may or may not be the oldest man, but you're clearly the most crotchety man. At least you've got that to hold onto if someone else is older.

I'm 55...still going out to shows at least once a month...and I still carry around my Sony Walkman CD player and listen to the discs at work with headphones...age is definitely a state of mind...keep rockin' out Renny...Happy New Year to all at IMWAN...

I'm 67 (68 in April).....and my wife kiddingly (or not) refers to me as a "grumpy old man!!" Some days I feel 18 and other days I feel 98. The one thing that never changes is that I love my music.......and frequent visits to IMWAN!!
