Well, the second. Paul McCartney has always cited Brian Wilson as an inspiration for pushing his own bass playing itno a more creative, more melodic place.

Didn't know BW played bass. I always thought he was a keyboard player. I'm sure you're right, I'm really not a BB fan.

The list ... it's like the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame all over again. I wouldn't expect all our personal favourites to be on such a list, but how about:

Steve Marriott
Peter Frampton
Syd Barrett
Paul Kossoff

These seem like pretty important omissions to me.

Brian wrote all of the bass lines (and every other part too), but many of his productions actually featured Carol Kaye of The Wrecking Crew on the recording. He was probably the first "creative rock bassist" in the sense I think you meant.

And no Steve Hunter or Dick Wagner.

Agree with you on there skill level , but they didn't make very many records. The 2 biggies were R&R Animal & Welcome To My Nightmare. And MAYBE Berlin live for Hunter. There solo stuff wasn't well known.

At least Mick Ronson is on the list for once.

If Carlos Santana, Jeff Beck and Van Halen practice really, really hard, maybe they could someday be as good as Kurt Cobain.

Awhile back I had an idea for a "most valuable players" thread, where everyone who wished to participate would pick there 2 all time favorite pop/rock players on each instrument (Lead guitar, rhythm guitar, bass, drums, keys, acoustic guitar, male vocals, female vocals, songwriters, ????)

or perhaps a pole on each instrument (I think we'd have to take nominations!)

I'm thinking there might be some interest based on where this thread is going!

Mike Oldfield is an underrated guitar player. I hear a lot of Oldfield in Brian May's style.

Kind of like what it takes to be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame! Ringo as a solo artist over Tull and Chicago is still making me quite ill.

Was "lost" a typo or an accurate statement?
