Description
• ELP began their illustrious career with an astonishing performance in front of 600,000 people at the Isle Of Wight Festival, in August 1970, to widespread acclaim
• ELP were torchbearers of the progressive rock sound who helped to broaden the audience for the genre from hundreds of thousands into tens of millions. One of rock's first super-groups and among the most commercially successful rock bands of the 1970s, they headlined stadium tours around the world and achieved global sales of over 40 million albums. Their first 7 album releases all made the U.K. albums chart top 10 and U.S. top 20
• ELP achieved two monumental hit singles with ‘Fanfare For The Common Man and ‘Lucky Man’
• The 21-minute long ‘Tarkus’ is among the top ten classic tracks in progressive rock history
• This is a comprehensive, career spanning 3CD set featuring classic tracks from ELPs original albums: 1970-1998: ELP, Pictures At An Exhibition, Tarkus, Trilogy, Brain Salad Surgery, Welcome Back My Friends To The Show That Never Ends, Works Volume 1, Works Volume 2, Works Live, Love Beach, Live At Nassau Coliseum '78, Black Moon, In The Hot Seat, Live At The Royal Albert Hall 1993, Then & Now
• First 3CD ELP ‘Best Of’ (previously 1CD or 2CD)
• Tracklist and artwork were approved by all 3 band members - Keith Emerson, Greg Lake and Carl Palmer

This is the best ELP comp I've seen (other than the From the Beginning box), and I will get it, despite having all the albums because I've wanted a good ELP comp (and most of them suck. This one gets it mostly right).
Also, in case the latter-day albums don't get remastered these tracks most likely will be.

talk about a catalog that has been overdone....ELP is right up there.

it would be interesting to know just how many times each of their albums has been re-released and on how many different labels.

and this is their second box set on top of all that, with less music than the 4CD first one.

My biggest problem with this set is live tracks supplanting studio versions. i tend to prefer my studio with studio and live with live.

Actually, this is all-encompassing with tracks from all of the band's studio albums and live albums so they are including songs from Pictures, Welcome Back, In Concert, etc. so it makes sense in that case.

Being a ELP completest I will get this. This is the first installment of what BMG has promised as a revisit of their catalogue. I hope they can continue the 5.1 mix program, that just may occur. I like the track selection, broad and encompassing.

I wonder if they will continue releasing the live archive CD's that Shout factory started. I hope so...

did they even sell that many records the first time around, let alone the second and third?

and still so many albums never on CD even once :(

Even if your statements were accurately factual other than innuendo then what can you deduct from your comments?

Let me help you, their catalogue sells. These are business decisions, nothing more.

Of course, once a catalogue changes ownership then out with the new (previous label incarnations are pulled from distribution) and replaced with current ownership.

As for stuff that you and I would like to see get released, there are reasons which we would hope get resolved before we "kick".

With that said, just be happy for what's put forward. I am as most others.

Well said Rick.

Why the negativity?

It's a BUSINESS.

Who frickin cares how many times the catalogue has been revisited.

They wouldn't do it if it didn't sell and this is a legendary band who still doesn't get the respect they deserve.

I applaud labels for keeping the band out there and making money for themselves and the bands, because isn't that what people are supposed to if they have a job???

Thanks Brother, coming from you is so reassuring and appreciated.

ELP especially should get more respect than they have. Of course I am more sensitive about this now since we lost Keith but I (and you) have always felt this way.

let's see now..."actually factual" i am trying to figure out what i typed that was not "actually factual".

i know, for a fact, that 'brain salad surgery" has been out on CD on atlantic - polygram - rhino - shout factory and razor & tie: and that is just in the U. S.

and there are many more issues of it world wide: http://rateyourmusic.com/release/album/ ... d_surgery/

and i wasn't berating ELP, i was commenting on ALL things being reissued over and over again, using this as an example. if you look at the steve miller thread i also commented on that one about 'wide river" and 'joker live" being reissued when we do not even have a single issue of 'rock love" or "journey form eden" i get the whole "making money" thing, but i do not like that the record companies are gouging the old guys who still buy physical product, because you know that is who this aimed directly at, kids are not going to be buying ELP, or any other classic rock act, in mass quantity anytime soon.

and i also get that fact that someone is shelling out money for these things, or they would not be making them.

but, i guess it is just fun to pick on the crotchety old man if he makes a comment that is not liked, i get it, and i can take it. :tiphat:

Renny, I'm with you on this reissue insanity - ELP, The Who, The Doors all released again and again, and rarely with any noticeable sonic (or content) improvement. It just makes me want to scream "Get off my lawn!!!"

These reissues provide incentives for stores to stock, magazines to review and old geezers (like me) to reassess a decision to upgrade or replace.
And specifically the material has changed licensee, therefore the reissue (at least in ELP's case).

It's simple people.

Now back to our regularly scheduled program.

How many times was The Doors catalogue issued and reissued (with multiple comps) before they finally released the two non-Morrison albums?

It took over 30 years for those to be issued in the US.

Essentially the same happens in books publishing. Shakespeare's works have been published and republished hundreds if not thousands of times over the last 400 years. Same with every major writer no matter what country or era. There are ALWAYS new readers who've yet to discover certain works, and book stores these days will only stock NEW editions of classic titles for those curious enough to seek them out. Dickens' words haven't changed in the hundred+ years since he first wrote them, only the materials used to present it. New editions of the same old music is basic business: it's called catalog. Major retailers will not stock old editions. Put a new edition sticker on it and they will buy it in quantity - all that matters is it's new. Hemingway's estate gets paid royalties to keep the legacy going, as does Keith Emerson's now. And frankly, I have all of ELP's albums so will not be getting these, but I am all for these and any future editions.

It took over 30 years for those to be issued in the US.

that is an easy one.....those 2 albums didn't sell the first time around, and i doubt too many people bought them this time either (although i did!)

as someone stated above, its all about the money.

i think that is the problem with the 2 steve miller albums never being issued on CD, they didn't sell that well first time around and miller, or whoever, doesn't want to put the money out to make them again. those were 2 of his lowest charting records. i also thing that is why punch andrews won;t release the 2 bob seger albums, the fear that they won't recoup the cost to make them.

It's a business. People are in it to make a profit. Of course it's about money. If they see no profit in it, it would be nuts for them to re-release something. You act as if there's something wrong with that.

Larry, believe me, he will never get it. It is the same mantra over and over.
