Description
About 100 miles south of Atlanta, next to a field just outside the town of Byron, Jimi Hendrix played his biggest ever US concert on 4th July, 1970 (to an estimated crown of 300,000-400,000). The massive Second Atlanta International Pop Festival was hailed then as the ‘Southern Woodstock’ and is now being recognized as the last great US Rock Festival.

Hendrix’s historic Independence Day appearance (a mere ten weeks before his passing) saw the musical icon, along with bassist Billy Cox and drummer Mitch Mitchell in rare form, tearing through Hendrix’s classic material (“Purple Haze”, “Fire”, a cover of Bob Dylan’s “All Along The Watchtower”) and introducing the crowd to works intended for his in-progress fourth studio album, including “Room Full Of Mirrors”, “Hear My Train A-Comin’”, “Freedom” and “Hey Baby (New Rising Sun)”. Another highlight of the set was Jimi’s rendition of “The Star Spangled Banner,” played against a backdrop of exploding fireworks.

Jimi’s performance was not only significant on a musical level, but also in terms of socio-political dynamics. The organizers were keen to push back against the cultural divide that was very much in evidence in the Deep South. It was assumed that rural audiences would not take kindly to “long-hair” bands, and that black and white artists could not comfortably exist on the same bill. Atlanta Pop set out to challenge those beliefs, and Hendrix’s music and message of universal love made him the ideal artist to represent that pushback. Against incredible odds, the event proved to be largely peaceful, and Jimi’s legendary set can be enjoyed in full on Freedom: Atlanta Pop Festival.

If the track listing is correct, it is missing the last song of the show Hey Baby (New Rising Sun).

Shocking that they'd do that.

Bizarre why they don't include the whole show.
I'd prefer the entire show & DVD/BluRay included

Hopefully the Allman Brothers performance at Atlanta will be on DVD/BluRay one of these days soon as well.

Bites that Hey Baby (one of his best songs, which I don't believe was ever truly finished) isn't included; but I'm in on this one. Obviously would prefer hi res.

Janie is saving the missing song for the next compilation.

Or for next year's remixed, remastered expanded, deluxe, ultimate definitive never-to-be-surpassed version of the album.

Here's the possible deal on the missing song, from a post on The Second Disc:

To answer your question, while Jimi could normally be very skillful at re-tuning his guitar “on the fly” mid-song, in this instance, Jimi’s guitar got so drastically out of tune, that even he could not re-tune it. Jimi never started the vocal for “Hey Baby(New Rising Sun)”, and simply found a way to quickly bring the song to an end. The tuning issue is so drastic that no modern technology could fix it. The omission of this track is merciful….to the fans and to Jimi’s reputation.

It's easy to forget that JH performed before the invention of the Floyd Rose bars, & his frequent use of the old Fender "whammy bar" raised havoc with guitar tuning. It's amazing he stayed in tune at all (I'm being serious).

The Woodstock cd is also missing a song. During the set second guitarist Larry Lee (?) sang a Curtis Mayfield song called Gypsy Woman that is not on the set. I believe for the same issue, that Jimi's guitar was so badly out of tune it was almost unlistenable.

No, I have that track (SBD) and another called Mastermind which was also sang by Larry Lee. Both songs are great and should have been included on the CD.

Ransakawa, I just read in several reviews on Amazon that this is the same show as disc 4 of Stages & that the Stages version has Hey Baby. Do you know yet if this is worth picking up if one has Stages?

Answered my own question (at least partially). While 2 reviewers on Amazon said Hey Baby is on Stages, it is not. This still has 5 more songs then Stages.

I guess my current ?'s would be: are the 5 performances quality (i.e. is it worth getting when I have Stages)? And how does the sound quality compare to Stages?

Played this today and I'm not blown away by the sound. The Douglas version is no worse
Bit disappointed with this set. Hope the DVD is better

Very nicely done production on all counts. Picked up the vinyl and CD today at FYE.

I have no affiliation with the FYE Music Store franchise. Having said that, let me say that FYE (housed within my local shopping mall) is now my go-to store for physical music product. They invariably have what I want; 98% of the time, on release day. Prices are reasonable.

So...I can now bid farewell to Target, Best Buy, WalMart and Fred Meyer, who all, over the past year, seem to be steadily depleting their music and movie sections.

(I know...the writing's on the wall.)

Fye here has more than anyone else (with the possible exception of the Lakewood Barnes & Noble; last time I was at B&N years ago it was books only). That said, where I live Fye has closed 75% of there stores (there clearance outlet used to be one of my suppliers, but it's closed also), & the local Fye is only cheap on ancient budget catalog.

All the FYEs here are gone.

I never bought a thing from them. I thought the prices and selection were pitiful.

The clearance stores had some Amazing deals. There was a time I was getting Factory Sealed Mo-fi's for under $5 (Borders was blowing them out in 1998 also)

I never used to buy a thing from them either, for the same reasons you give. I gave them another chance and found that they've changed their prices and selection for the better. Again...not affiliated in anyway...but when the pickin's are as slim as they seem to be these days, it's nice to have a go-to store.
