Deep Purple's Made In Japan 40th anniversary edition news update:
UMG have confirmed that the new package will include a new documentary based on Mark 2 and the Made In Japan period, and will at long last feature the 20+ mins of 8mm vision taken at the time at the legendary Tokyo concert in August 1972.

Unless there is something extra special with this release, I'm happy with the 2CD set from years ago.
Yeah-I'm not interested at all. In fact, I'm one of those who finds some of the original dull as hell. It's got killer moments, but long-winded ones too.

Much as I am a Blackmore fan, there was way too much improv for me, even the early Rainbow gigs were like this. I guess coming off of Deep Purple, that's pretty much all Blackmore knew. Don't get me wrong, some of it was great but it was a little too much for my taste. That being said, Ritchie Blackmore is still the best guitarist for me.

Yep-my favorite guitar player ever.
But Purple's Made In Japan and Rainbow's On Stage are just too much. Hardly any actual songs-lots of improvs and little structure.
That being said, there are enough moments of brilliance on each album, just not for numerous revisits by me.

One of my favorite Blackmore era bands has always been the Rainbow Down to Earth era. Bonnett was a great vocalist and the guitar sounded great on that album. I was hoping for a Castle Donnington release with the deluxe version of that album, but the extra bonus songs were not that bad. Weiss Heim is one of the best instrumentals Blackmore has ever done.

The improv doesn't bother me at all; after all I'm a Dead fan & a prog fan! That said, though my business has carried it, I've never grabbed a copy of the 3 cd set. I'm ok with the 2 cd version.

From what I've been told that Castle Donnington DVD will be with the upcoming Rainbow boxset. Don't know if it is the full show-I hope so.

A full Donnington show would be great. The version I have is only about 30 minutes. I'm trying to figure out what a Rainbow box set would include.

4 CDs/ 1 DVD with classic cuts, and rarities although what rarities, I haven't been told yet. Hopefully better than what appeared on the Deluxe Editions.

Lets get back to DP - Made in Japan. I am sorry, but Rainbow died after RJD left.
As for Purple, the previous remaster of Made In Japan is enough for me. This is basically just rehash with this Deluxe. But the next ones in 2014 are what I am looking forward to.

What do the 2014 releases have in store for us?
The Deluxes of Perfect Strangers and House Of Blue Light. Those are on another thread somewhere.
