I was just reading an article in the June issue of Uncut magazine that stated there will be a comprehensive Who box set released later this year. Does anyone know anything about it ?

Unless some significant, unreleased vault material has turned up, it's hard to see how a new box could improve on the box from 1994 other than by upgrading the audio (particularly with access to the Talmy masters) or maybe by expanding on the number of discs. A "complete studio catalog" box isn't out of the question, either--all of the Moon-era material (albums, singles, b-sides) would probably fit on about ten discs.
Whatever it is, I'll buy it.

Original mixes would make it worthwhile.

My all-time favorite band, but boy oh boy, would it take a lot to sell me another Who box set. The complete SF December 1971 show is the only essential missing piece of the Who puzzle at this point, unless they have the complete Fillmore East 1968 show without the fadeouts. Other than that, they are comprehensively well documented.

If I had a Who wishlist at this point...I'd like a "2nd Singles Box", I'd at least like to see the original "Concerts For The People Of Kampuchea" album reissued on CD, but what I'd really like to see more than anything is an authoritative detailed sessionography/discography. On the other hand, Pete lately seems to be recording and releasing new music again--can't complain about that.

A few years ago the Who management called on anyone with rare Who tapes to come forward. They were in turn offered tickets to a Who show. Maybe this box is a result of that?

I never thought much of the R &B box.
It would be nice to see the box at least include the odds and ends latter day tracks like "Dig", "Fire",'Real Good Looking Boy", "Old Red Wine", "Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting", "Be Lucky" end up on the same collection.
Original mixes, more live material (and I'm thinking this could be just a live box), and whatever else.
I'm interested but I'll wait and see what it entails.

That box was one of the several sub-standard Who boxes. Cross-fades, remixes, edtis. The accompaning VHS of the same name was light years better. That one, oddly enough has been reissued twice on DVD. In order to have everything, one must have both DVDs plus the tape.

That one, oddly enough has been reissued twice on DVD. In order to have everything, one must have both DVDs plus the tape. I still have a Yellow Dog bootleg CD called "Life With The Moons" which was comprised of "Upgrades From The Boxed Set" and which came out not more than a couple of months after the "R & B" box. It contained things such as the unedited "Jaguar" and a few other previously bootlegged items such as "Cousin Kevin Model Child" the alternate version of "Behind Blue Eyes". Since 1994, I think that essentially everything on the bootleg has been officially released except for an alternate version of "One Life's Enough" and the unedited Keith Moon comedy sketches. What was great about the "R & B" box is that it (along with the accompanying video) marked the first release of "new" Moon-era vault material since the "Who's Missing"/"Two's Missing" comps, and as such continues to stand as something of a watershed for Who collectors. It is also noteworthy that the box has remained in print for 21 years now--and I don't know that adding "Endless Wire" material would necessarily be an improvement. As for the video--I have the OOP DVD with the Bill Graham material from the original VHS and laserdisc. I think that stuff was replaced on the newer DVD because Wolfgang's Vault jacked up the Who's cost to license the footage.

A band of this stature has to have a ton of live tapes sitting on a shelf somewhere. Why they never put out anything from their 70's heights is beyond me. Roger did claim in an interview a couple of years ago that the band had a stash of vintage live recordings...but I don't think that any further corroboration has ever been provided by anybody else in the Who organization. Maybe he was right...maybe they have found something. They do own the 1977 Kilburn show and have released it on DVD, but I'd like to own it on CD. That said, all indications are that other than the "Live At Leeds" gigs, the Who never had the foresight to record their own shows on multi-track tapes back in the 1970's. The best existing vintage live multi-track tapes were those created for broadcasts such as "King Biscuit Flower Hour"; for the Who to use them, they apparently have to pay a licensing fee. The same seems likely for the 1979 Kampuchea concert--the Who apparently even failed to retain ownership of the multi-track tapes of the 1982 Toronto pay-per-view show. Video/audio from several other shows--Tanglewood 1970, the 1968 Fillmore show, and (I'm pretty sure) the 1971 San Francisco show were made by Bill Graham and are currently owned by Wolfgang's Vault. The other problem with creating a full-blown live boxed set (other than within the past ten years the Who have already released a couple of live anthologies in "View From A Backstage Pass" and "Greatest Hits Live") is that as the seventies progressed, the Who did not tend to dig very deep into their own catalog. Just about every show included "I Can't Explain", "Substitute", "Pinball Wizard", "See Me. Feel Me", "Magic Bus", "Squeeze Box", "Behind Blue Eyes", "Summertime Blues" and "Won't Get Fooled Again". In other words, filling up more than a couple of discs with unique songs would be difficult--unless, of course, they release yet another full-length performance of "Tommy".

Whatever it is, I'll buy it. That's my guess. The studio albums + Live At Leeds + bonus discs to collect all the various non-album songs. I'm not a huge fan of The Who but have long considered checking out their catalog. I know they released a big vinyl box set of the studio albums a couple years ago. Was there ever an equivalent release on compact disc? If there wasn't, now seems to be a good time to get it on the market.

I'd be interested in a live box set as well.
