I guess no artist under the Universal banner is safe from this Icon series, but damn it's weird seeing those John and Ringo titles.

It's too bad that Universal seemed to has stopped its 2 disc Gold series some time ago.

Yeah, and started the new "Icon 2" two-disc sets. Not sure what the point is though. "Icon" is the new "20th Century Masters: Millennium Collection." "Icon 2" is the new "Gold." I guess the Universal-EMI merger gives reason to reissue a whole lot of the same stuff yet again under a different title.

I agree they should have continued the "Gold" series. Those were seriously well done. At least the Sony "Essential" series seems to still be plugging along.

I'm getting that Ringo set for sure.

One artist that's under the UMe banner hasn't had a set like this; Rufus & Chaka Khan. Aside from the 'Greatest Hits' set from 1982, I've yet to see a good (or new) comp for this group.

The Who, of course, have had both single-disc and 2-disc "Icon" compilations.

Pretty much and it's too bad because the 20th Century Masters: Millennium Collection often had decent liner notes for a budget line. I know that there are varied opinions on the sound quality, none that I own are loud. And the Gold series was a nice extension of that. Some of the Gold ones are really great and now, we have this... even the 2 disc Icon sets are crappy and don't have nearly the amount of tracks as Gold.

Oddly, Universal has still put out some 20th Century Masters discs - I saw a Beach Boys one in Walmart that is recent (would have to have been after they got Capitol) and they also had several apparently contemporary Christian acts on the series - all with 2013 or 14 copyrights... well after Icon started.

True and I picked up a newer one earlier this year. I think that they are doing a better job with their budget line, the "Playlist, the best of...." series than Universal is, but I think Sony's line started much later.

Agree. And many of the "Playlist" titles have included a rare b-side, single edit/mix, etc. for some added value.

I've gotten into the habit of always looking into the track-listings for budget comps. There's also the "Extended Versions" series--the Alice Cooper title has some rare live cuts.

I read that someone was going to release a "proper" Rufus & Chaka Khan retrospective, but it got cancelled for mysterious reasons.
No idea how true it is or why.
