I remember the song being big on New York radio, but it never broke out nationally:
That's a rip of the original vinyl, not Real Gone's new remaster. Ric Ocasek can be clearly heard in the background vocals. It seemed like Ian Lloyd was going to ride the new wave/power pop onslaught into the charts that summer, but it didn't happen.

I'm Coming Home was a big hit in central Va, # 1 on the local chart. I thought these guys were British based on Ian Lloyd's vocals, and heck they even look British, but alas they're all Yanks. I have The History of The Left Banke LP which has tracks 1, 2, 3, & 7 of the above, looking forward to this new comp, hope it's all in stereo.
I did not know this, from Wiki:
"As a backup singer, Lloyd worked with numerous major recording artists, most notably Foreigner, who used Lloyd's vocals on hits like "Feels Like the First Time," "Cold as Ice," "Waiting for a Girl Like You," "Juke Box Hero", and "Double Vision." Lloyd can also be heard on Billy Joel’s "I Go to Extremes", as well as tracks by Yes, Peter Frampton, Survivor, and Ian McDonald."

This is pretty cool to see, although it's got some data superimposed over it. Ian Lloyd's current label has uploaded a 1974 appearance by Stories on Don Kirshner's Rock Concert:
