Not sure if this is what the clock countdown on the http://www.j-tull.com website is all about, since the dates are a couple months apart, but Amazon's now listing 2 different versions of Aqualung to be released 11-1-11.

Very different prices so I suspect the expensive one must have a lot of extras, maybe LP/dvd's? I've always felt fortunate to have a copy of the DCC gold remaster of Aqualung, 'cause it's the only good sounding one to my ears. I'll probably pop for the cheaper version if it is a new remaster just since it's been a long time since the DCC gold. (Can't imagine that this would not be a new remaster!)

I've only owned one Aqualung to date and it's the Hoffman-mastered DCC. Sounds great and I'm good with that. Aside from that, the only Tull I have is a two disc best of.

Steve Wilson of Porcupine Tree is engineering this remaster so I'm in along with the addition of 5.1 sound for the first time.

if this 40th is anything at all like the 30th it will be shit, because the 30th is simply one of the worst sounding CD's i've ever heard. it is noise-reductioned to death.

i have a CD-R of the hoffman (thanks jimbo) and have never been able to get a real one at anything close to a reasonable price. never even seen one for less than $100.

I have an original DCC Tull, thank god I bought it when I did (I always was a sucker for GOLD discs). So this new remaster has quite a hill to climb but I can't imagine it sounding like the 30th Anniv disc. That one is just unbelievable.

I also own a dcc Aqualung which I found for 12 dollars in a newbury comics a few year past.

I would say that yes, Aqualung is a great album, and it's the one more casual fans of the band tend to go for, but IMO they have four or five albums at least that are better.

Along with King Crimson, they're my favorite of the seventies progressive rock bands.

Since this new one is a REMIX, not just a remaster, I'd want it even if I had the DCC. I do have the DCC of Thick as a Brick....

Mr. Top (or any seasoned Tull fans here), can you give me those four or five titles? Every so often, I think about delving a little deeper into the Tull catalog.

Thick As A Brick
Minstrel In The Gallery
Heavy Horses
Crest Of A Knave
a few others are close too

I truly love this band and have everything. There's only a few clunkers but they have such a vast catalogue you'll see some Tull fans disagree as to what is good or lousy.

Wow, snap! Agree with that, incl Songs... as the best, apart from I'd have Aqualung instead of Crest... I love Farm On The Freeway, but really wish they'd recorded it in the 70's, if you get what I mean.

The live set Bursting Out has a great track listing for somebody starting to explore a bit further.

Songs From The Wood & the companion live album Burstin' Out are probably my 2 favs also, but for me Aqualung is right up there. I like pretty much everything from This Was through Songs. Songs was the last studio album I liked, though I have enjoyed some of the later live albums (especially Bustin Out & A Little Light Music) & rarities comps.

I also find myself listening to Stormwatch and A a lot recently. I didn't rate either very highly when I first heard them but I love them now.

Anything from Crest of a Knave on is a different listen because his voice is blown out and his range is gone, but I rate Crest and Roots to Branches very highly out of that bunch.

And avoid Under Wraps.

I find myself often listening to Disc 2 of Night Cap.
For an album of "rejects," many recorded again later by Ian when
his voice isn't the greatest, these are pretty damn good songs.

I still think Aqualung is their finest moment but my other favs are:

I always find it interesting how what an artist feels about his or her work doesn't always jive with what an audience feels. Several Tull alumni over the years have consistently expressed their opinion that The Broadsword And The Beast is the best album Jethro Tull ever did. I am pretty sure it is in Ian's top 3. Yet many Tull fans in America who I have run across dislike that record...some passionately. I know a few Tull fans personally who feel very strongly that some of the outtakes are better than some of the songs on the original LP. The band recorded a ton of material for that album.
