Van Morrison To Release 5-Disc Moondance Album

2013 has been a good year to revisit the classics: From John Fogerty’s Wrote A Song For Everyone and Steve Earle’s The Warner Bro. Years to Bob Dylan’s AmericanramA tour and Paul McCartney’s show-stopping Bonnaroo set, there has been no forgetting the roots and influences of so much of modern music. Not one to be left out, Van Morrison is releasing a remastered edition of the 1970 breakthrough album Moondance.

The re-release will be available in CD and digital form, with the former available in three length options: single disc, double disc, or 5-disc set. Along with the polished up original Moondance tracks, fans will be treated to unreleased tracks and studio outtakes. (The 2-disc set features one disc/11 tracks of unreleased material, the 5-disc set boasts three whole CDs of new material.)

For the truly committed, the complete package also provides a booklet of liner notes from Alan White and a Blu-ray audio disc presented in 5.1 surround sound, all bundled in a “linen-wrapped folio.”

Prices range from $11.98 – $69.98 and will be available September 30 from Warner Bros. Records.

Finally! What a pity that they never finished remastering his catalog.

Yikes.

Goodbye, $69.98. It's been fun.

Astral Weeks, too, please.

I just don't care about Van Morrison enough to fork over that much money for that much redundancy.

WOW. After all of these years of waiting for a remastered version, nice to see they went all out! I can only imagine how many more they would have sold if this would've come out 15 years ago.

I wish more albums would get this kind of attention. THIS is the way to do a Deluxe Edition!

I'd love to just have the 5.1 surround disc....

This is great news. Whether I get the 5cd or 2cd version depends on how different the versions of the multiple takes are from one another. I could imagine them actually being quite different from one another. Looking forward to reviews from members of this board!

Oh, and I'm also looking forward to a remastered Astral Weeks (if it happens). It's one of my favorite albums of all time. If I was trying to explain earth music to an alien I would use this album as it contains so many genres blended seamlessly into a perfect whole: soul music, jazz, folk, and so on. It's also the first and last time Van let his Bob Dylan influence get free reign in the lyrics department.

I just can't believe all of these versions are worth it - a few great selections along with unreleased songs would be much more interesting.

Yeah, the two disc looks more appealing to me (I would like the surround, but not that much).

So, to get hi-rez, I have to buy a 4 disc set in addition to the original American CD release
and my Japanese copy? How 'bout a hybrid SACD that'll give me reamstered layers in
redbook CD, stereo & 5.1 all on one disc...?

I'm so pissed off about this trend, I think I'll pass on this one and put the saved $$$ into a
D/A converter that'll make all of my CDs sound great, one high def data bit at a time... I
remember back in '91 or '92 when Mark Levenson put out the first 2 piece transport & DAC,
with an esteemed reviewer in either Stereophile or The Absolute Sound, stating "Phillips &
Sony, with their choice of giving us 16 bits of information for compact disc, might have been
all the more accurate in just how much bit rate you really need for the red book standard,
for, the people at Mark Levenson LTD created a digital front end that extracts every bit of
info from the optical disc we've been lambasting since it's launch just a few years ago ('82-
'83). There's so much music that we've been missing until now with their new world class
transport & D/A converter..."

Puzzled by the Blu-Ray factor -- seems to me that the demographic specific to Blu-Ray audio wouldn't care about the 4 discs of non-uber audio, just like the 4-cd set would appeal just fine to the average Morrison enthusiast without the extra $$$ that including the Blu-Ray costs. Doesn't make sense to me. I can see the "highlights" set to a point, but that just makes it seem like getting the COMPLETE outtakes set isn't quite necessary. Record companies still aren't getting it. It's like those Super Deluxe sets with multiple CDs *and* the album on vinyl, in the same set. Those who'd buy one won't buy the other -- what're we s'posed to do, "regift" them?

Ironically, a friend did just that with the Jethro Tull Aqualung deluxe edition that came with the vinyl, CDs & a DVD. He kept the original digital discs but sent me the vinyl along with the gatefold sleeve. Not sure where he kept his discs, since that sleeve WAS the packaging of the set. I was very happy to get the vinyl but I couldn't believe he would part with it. I think he's an rare exception to the rule.

This is a classic, if I can find the 4 cd set discounted later in the year I'm going for it.

Van Morrison To Release 5-Disc Moondance Album

Yeah...Van Morrison is not releasing anything. Warner is. And Van is likely indifferent or outright annoyed.

So, you're saying that this is resulting in no change in Van's countenance, then?

A MESSAGE FROM VAN MORRISON.

Yesterday Warner Brothers stated that "Van Morrison was reissuing Moondance". It' is important that people realise that this is factually incorrect. I did not endorse this, it is unauthorised and it has happened behind my back

My management company at that time gave this music away 42 years ago and now I feel as though it"s being stolen from me again

Sorry if Van's unhappy, but WB obvioiusly has the rights. At some point the dotted line was signed. That's life. I'm sure Van is comfortable and able to pay the bills.

I'm glad that I've reached the point in life where, as a consumer, I can pretty easily ignore the B.S. and simply enjoy the music. Looks like there's gonna be a lot to be enjoyed in this package.

Pre-ordered from Amazon on sight.

Well, at least 'someone' is keeping Van Morrison's titles in print since Van won't. What a curmudgeon! I get that in what must seem like a lifetime ago some unfavorable, maybe even unsavory, things may have happened. The rock 'n' roll road is littered with this kind of legacy for some artists. But, that was then, this is now. He now owns the vast majority of his catalogue and does what with it? - keeps it to himself....kudos to Warner Bros. The 4CD/1BR seems a bit excessive but the 2CD is a sure thing....

I just hope this thing sells sufficiently to get reissues of Astral Weeks and His Band & Street Choir to happen.
