On its face, this appears to be a compilation focusing on two Ronnie Lane albums from the mid-70s—Ronnie Lane's Slim Chance (1975) and One For The Road (1976)—plus assorted extras including alternate versions and live BBC tracks. At first glance, looked like a great way to pick up two long out of print and very pricey (if you can even find them) CDs.

After reviewing and comparing track lists, there's unfortunately a catch (if the tracklisting for this comp is correct on allmusic-- see http://www.allmusic.com/album/ooh-la-la ... 0002591435 ). Based on the allmusic tracklist, the comp includes all 9 tracks of One For The Road but just 11 out of Slim Chance's 13 original tracks. The 2 missing tracks ("I'm Just A Country Boy" and "You Never Can Tell" ARE present, sort of, but as alternate versions--"Alternate Take" and "Take 1" respectively. I don't know how specifically different the "other" versions are from the originals, but both the alternates have longer running times.

Seriously, though, how difficult would it have been to include the 2 tracks as originally released? Annoying. Still probably the most affordable way in many moons to get (most of) two very highly rated Ronnie Lane albums that I've been looking to purchase for awhile.

I like this. Can anybody tell me if it's in a jewelcase or not? I'll probably get it no matter what but I'm curious to know before I buy.

I have a lot of his albums. During a Small Faces binge about 6 years ago, I went crazy to the point of even overpaying for Anymore for Anymore. I'll likely het this anyway, but hope it leads to proper reissues of his regular albums.

Having heard the 30-second preview snippets, it isn't just two tracks from RLSC that are alternate takes - the differences are subtle to the casual listener but striking if you know the songs well. The One For The Road tracks seem to be all the usual versions, so unless you're desperate for the original packaging this will probably save you hunting that one down. Which makes the alt versions for RLSC both wonderful and frustrating in equal measure - this could have been a great opportunity to reissue both albums as God intended, but there's no denying the thrill and chill I got just from hearing a few subtle differences in the previews. Add to that the unreleased [and admittedly half-formed] 'Back Street Boy', and the last seven tracks from a previously unreleased BBC TV Sight And Sound In Concert, and this is an essential purchase for any self-respecting Ronnie fan.

My one quibble would be that the mood of each album is quite distinct and mixing up the tracks loses that atmosphere. But overall I'm nearly as excited for this as I was when Ron's BBC sessions collection was released back in the 1990s.

This might even just be tasty enough to wash away the bad taste left by the UK distribution debacle with the Small Faces box.
