The powers that be believe there is no interest in an expanded edition of 'Rockin the Fillmore" There is additional tape of recorded shows. However, the powers that be believe there is a sameness to the shows that does not merit their release. Is there any interest?

Linda adds -- an expanded edtion is now forthcoming from Omnivore:

Image

One of the world’s greatest live albums is now four times greater!

When Steve Marriott left the Small Faces (Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame Class of 2012) to launch a new band in 1968, expectations were high. Marriott teamed with 18-year-old guitarist Peter Frampton, already a U.K. star through his work with The Herd, along with bassist Greg Ridley from Spooky Tooth, and 17-year-old drummer Jerry Shirley, who Steve Marriott had used as a session player for Andrew Loog Oldham’s Immediate Record Label.

Humble Pie recorded four albums and several singles before achieving its U.S. breakthrough with their 1971 the double-live set Performance: Rockin’ The Fillmore. Drawn from four shows played over two consecutive nights at Bill Graham’s legendary Fillmore East, Performance captured a red-hot band firing on all cylinders, distilling the crowd-pleasing heavy blues-rock style that had come to dominate the Brit foursome’s repertoire, and which would help to lay the foundation for the sound that would soon become known as heavy metal. Performance caught on in a big way with American listeners, hitting #21 on the U.S. album chart and becoming the Pie’s first Gold album.

Now, for the first time, Omnivore Recordings has gathered all four shows from Humble Pie’s historic Fillmore East stand in this lovingly packaged four-CD box set. No editing or resequencing—just the four sets as they were played on May 28 and 29, 1971. The seven tracks that comprised the original album are joined here by 15 previously unissued performances—including the never-before-heard complete first set from May 28!

You may not need no doctor, but you do need Humble Pie’s Performance: Rockin’ The Fillmore – The Complete Recordings.

I was 17 the first time I listened to it - I'm 50 now, and still listen to it - and the day
I'm not interested in listening to it will be when I consider myself "old".

According to the liner notes in the "Hot'nNasty" compilation, the only song played during those shows NOT on RTF was a one-off encore of Money.

If RTF represented the "best" version of each song, then any expansion of the set could only represent diminishing returns, surely? (Unless Humble Pie were more expansive and inventive jammers than perhaps I'm giving them credit for)

z-phage,
Am I to understand correctly that you may be able to bring this to the attention of any of the powers that be you mention? In this particular case, I would consider it an essential purchase if an expanded Deluxe Edition of Humble Pie's Rockin' The Fillmore were to be released. Even if another set had a duplicate set of songs, the liklihood, for the times, was that there were some different notational and riffing things going on from one show to the next while still maintaining a basic core.
The dynamism between the late Steve Marriot and Peter Frampton draws people like a magnet to this album in particular. On a marketing level, it has to be emphasized that this was when Frampton played a more crunchy style of guitar. It would surprise the people who only know of his post-Humble Pie & Frampton Comes Alive material (which is no slouch, but a different approach) just how much more aggressive a player he was with the Pie.
Tell the powers that be to get off of their duffs and get this baby out! I have spent well over a decade wishing a special package for Rockin' The Fillmore would get some kind of release.

I'm in. RTF was always one of my favorite live albums. "It's really been a gas!"

Hmmm... With a little under two hundred views, only 7 seven positive responses, this isn't looking good. Unfortunately, it looks like 'the powers that be' may be right.

Well, Humble Pie are not going to get the same attention as, say, the Stones or
Beatles, but to those who know this classic live album, there is nothing like it.
I am more interseted actually in a better sounding remaster/reissue of RTF, but having
not heard the other sets from this tour, I don't really know if they are any better than
what was put on the album. The 2007 Japan 24bit Remasters are pretty good, but
they could have been done a little better by a really good recording engineer.
Frampton should pull this together, I bet there would be more "interest" if his name
was on it. He and Marriott were working together again right before Marriott was killed
(smoking in bed) - I'm sure this classic would be well recieved by many (I would buy
three!) - This performance, by the way, was played as part of the last week of shows
closing the Fillmore East theater (which from a rock history perspective, is another
good reason to reissue this album) - maybe put it together with a few other band's
sets and make a "Last Days of the Fillmore East" set. - could be an interesting
project for some boomers looking for someting to do, eh?

I'd get it. Why don't they (Universal) do it as a Hip-O Select title, much like the complete Joe Cocker shows~

To do a Joe Cocker style offer they need to be able to move 5000 units. Thus far, they believe there is too much sameness amongst the shows, and that there is not enough consumer interest.

So far, there has been 275 views with only about 11 yes votes.

No, just a fan who thought he could prove the 'powers that be wrong", but it looks like they are right. There isn't enough interest.

Have you been in e-mail contact with them before concerning Rockin' The Fillmore? How do we know that there isn't the possibility that it will still eventually come out? There might have been circumstances which got in the way. Universal may have had the idea to issue a bunch of titles if only the big belt-tightening didn't happen. The fact that we are now seeing an Elvis Costello-My Aim Is True Deluxe Edition may be a sign that things are going to loosen up a little. Mind you, it's not much to go on. But it's a start.
I would also caution you about assuming that 11 responses doesn't mean much here. If 11 of us were thinking of this, you can bet that a silent majority of people who love this album (and whom don't get the opportunity to or choose not to get involved with online music discussions like on this board) are thinking the same thing and that Universal/Hip-O Select isn't aware of that. I would prefer that the powers that be say for themselves if a title isn't going to be worthy of release or not. They've been known to change their minds.

Hi.
I would be happy to buy an expanded, remastered Humble Pie...Rockin' The Fillmore...preferably in a CD store!
Count me in, too!

Rather than expanding Rockin' at the Fillmore, I'd rather see the whole A&M catalog made available again. It's all available as expensive imports. Hopefully, some day soon, it will be available domestically, too.

In fact, that would be a good way to justify releasing an expanded Rockin' at the Fillmore!

I'd probably by the expanded version whether it was part of reissue program or a one-off release.

Holy crap I was just saying in another thread how I wish an EXPANDED/DELUXE/whatever edition of this album would be released. I don't even care if it is songs taken from another night that are the same - I want it!!!

As far as taking a sampling of the folks chiming in with YES vs. NO votes here and trying to translate that into sales I don't think it shakes out very accurately. Most people that I know that have this album would be drooling to pick up an expanded version. And none of them are on this forum - I myself didn't even discover this place until a few daze ago !
