Andy Fraser discusses a new Free box set in the Feb. 2014 issue of Classic Rock magazine. While the release date isn't confirmed, there will be at least two versions of the box. One 19 CD deluxe box, including all of the Free catalog, along with unreleased outtakes & alternate versions, a hardcover book that will hold 16 CDs, a gatefold LP-styled sleeve that will hold the other 3 CDs, along with photo prints, flyers, a tour booklet and a reproduction of an original Marquee club contract. There will be a more affordable scaled down version of the box as well.

Bannings: If you're not nice
This has been in the works for a couple of years. Free's website has had provisional cover art posted for a while -- it's a small (and not necessarily finalised) image, but I've put that into the first post. Here's a larger version of the cover photo, sans text:

The website also offers this description of the box:

Quote:
The story of Free is also the story of the pioneering spirit of hard rock as we know it. It says much for their influence and importance that Free’s legacy is regarded with veneration and adulation by so many young bands.

Although very much a blues rock band, what set Free apart from so many others in this sphere is that they were prepared to be inventive as well as being true to the tradition from which they grew. You can hear the band’s roots in the music and also appreciate the way they use these to develop their own timbre and style.

This is the ultimate Free collection – the whole musical story, which gives you an insight into the way they matured and progressed as well as a further appreciation for the way in which these individuals each remain giants. What this box set does is bring together all their recordings. The ones which built their reputation and also the less well known and renowned songs that help to define their enduring appeal. Their studio albums, outtakes and even rehearsal recordings are included. It’s the story of the band from beginning to end.

But then it says, "Available Summer 2012". :) So hopefully things have finally come together and we'll have it in our hands later this year.

I have the original Free Box Image that came out in May 2000.

I really liked it even though some complained about the mastering. I had no problem with it, actually liked it a lot. One of my favorite UK only box sets amongst Uriah Heep's "Chapter and Verse: The Uriah Heep Story" Image

Of COURSE! After the fans purchased the original no-frills flat CDs, then the box set, then complete catalog again, but now remastered with bonus tracks, it's time to figure out a way to get those diehard fans who have to hear six alternate takes of "All Right Now" re-purchase 90% of what they already own, but now in a really expensive box set with a book. See Moody Blues, Small Faces etc. etc. etc. and, for a "new" artist who gets this concept, see Steven Wilson, a genuis as a musician, at re-mastering and remixing, and ... at marketing.

I can only hope there is enough quality unreleased stuff — after one would think it was already included with the earlier editions — to justify whatever this will cost. Unfortunately, it'll be on Univer$al ... like the Moodie$.

All of the Free albums need work. I'm not really happy with the sound of anything except the Songs Of Yesterday box.

(And because this is Universal, I'm also hoping for BD-As.)
