If You Can Believe Your Eyes And Ears
Mono Edition

October 24, 2011

Product Description
Upon its release in 1966, the Mamas and the Papas’ debut LP If You Can Believe Your Eyes and Ears introduced a fresh new sound that would permanently alter the face of contemporary popular music. Leader John Phillips’ visionary producing, arranging and songwriting abilities combined with the quartet’s breathtaking harmonies to make music that was both effortlessly accessible and creatively adventurous. The album quickly topped the album charts, bringing folk-rock into the pop mainstream and making John Phillips, Michelle Phillips, Denny Doherty and Cass Elliot into instant multimedia celebrities. In the years since its release, If You Can Believe Your Eyes and Ears has come to be regarded as one of the finest pop albums of the ’60s and one of the best debut releases ever, delivering such instant classics as “California Dreamin’,” “Monday, Monday” and “Go Where You Wanna Go” to the willing ears of record buyers and radio listeners.

Our new compact disc edition restores the rare, long-missing “toilet seat” cover and features a short essay by David Fricke. Sourced from the superior-sounding mono masters—the album maintains the same joyous sense of discovery that listeners felt when first hearing this gem in 1966.

1. Monday, Monday
2. Straight Shooter
3. Got a Feelin’
4. I Call Your Name
5. Do You Wanna Dance?
6. Go Where You Wanna Go
7. California Dreamin’
8. Spanish Harlem
9. Somebody Groovy
10. Hey Girl
11. You Baby
12. The “In” Crowd

I would expect this to be identical to the vinyl edition - with no bonuses. It will be nice to have the mono mixes on CD at last - those 60's stereo mixes are pretty wonky. I read "somewhere" awhile back that this is sourced from a UK tape that was found - no idea if it's a copy of the original mono master or one that was EQ'd for vinyl cutting. Bob Irwin would know. One thing is for sure, it's not the original Dunhill mono master - those tapes & many more were reportedly destroyed long ago.

Here is the Sundazed site, if you would like to listen to samples: http://www.sundazed.com/shop/product_in ... ts_id=1794

The original cover too! That poor toilet seat got edited out more than once back then. Oh how times have changed.

Since these mid-60s lps only had a running time of about 30 minutes it seems to me a more attractive package could have been put together combining all 3 or 4 of their lps mono masters (Not sure the 4th lp "Papas and Mamas" was ever available in mono) on perhaps a 2-cd set.

The problem is that the whole focus of this release is the mono mixes - and if I remember what I read correctly, this is the only album they've found a mono tape of. (Wish I could remember where I saw this...)

I'll be getting this. My understanding is that these mixes smoke the stereo stuff that has been released.

Coincidentally, I have been making my own mono collection of their lps transfered to cd as this thread was started.

I think it has been noted in the past that the mono lp versions of their hits are different mixes from their 45 counterparts so you may want both.

The vinyl was made from a 15 IPS mono EQ tape found in the UK.

The Mamas And The Papas
Mono Edition

September 24, 2013

Product Description
In their brief but eventful reign as one of America’s hippest and most popular recording acts, the Mamas and the Papas—Denny Doherty, Cass Elliot, Michelle Phillips and main songwriter/sonic architect John Phillips—created a uniquely captivating brand of smart, harmony-laden pop that was consistently inventive and innovative, yet effortlessly commercial.

Although their hitmaking heyday lasted less than three years, these trendsetting California dreamers left a long-lasting mark on popular music, releasing a series of hit singles and classic albums that remain deeply ingrained in the pop-culture consciousness four and a half decades later. Now, Sundazed Music brings the Mamas and the Papas’ much-requested, long-out-of-print second and third albums back to the marketplace in LP and CD editions that preserve their timeless brilliance for the ages.

These beloved ‘60s classics have been lovingly restored by Sundazed Music to their original glory, on high-quality vinyl LP as well as pristine Compact Disc. In both formats, these definitive editions faithfully reproduce the album’s iconic original cover art, while careful mastering from the original reels guarantees that they’ve never sounded better than they do here.

Released in the fall of 1966, the Mamas and the Papas’ self-titled second album remains one of the foursome’s most enduring and popular releases, and contains some of the most appealing and accomplished music that they ever produced. Along with the infectious hits “I Saw Her Again” and “Words of Love,” The Mamas and the Papas features such John Phillips-penned favorites as “No Salt On Her Tail,” “Dancing Bear” and “Trip, Stumble and Fall,” along with distinctive covers of Martha and the Vandellas’ Motown anthem “Dancing in the Street” and the Rodgers and Hart standard “My Heart Stood Still.”

1. No Salt On Her Tail
2. Trip, Stumble & Fall
3. Dancing Bear
4. Words Of Love
5. My Heart Stood Still
6. Dancing In The Street
7. I Saw Her Again
8. Strange Young Girls
9. I Can't Wait
10. Even If I Could
11. That Kind Of Girl

Released in early 1967, the group’s third longplayer Deliver is one of the Mamas and the Papas’ essential works, and an exquisitely engaging expression of the group’s singular pop artistry. The album produced a pair of Top Five singles in the amusingly autobiographical “Creeque Alley” and the quartet’s transcendent reading of “Dedicated to the One I Love,” previously recorded by the “5” Royales and the Shirelles. Other highlights include the much-loved originals “Look Through My Window” and “Boys & Girls Together,” and reworkings of the Smokey Robinson-penned Temptations classic “My Girl” and the Beatles/Isley Brothers hit “Twist and Shout.”

1. Dedicated To The One I Love
2. My Girl
3. Creeque Alley
4. Sing For Your Supper
5. Twist And Shout
6. Free Advice
7. Look Through My Window
8. Boys & Girls Together
9. String Man
10. Frustration
11. Did You Ever Want To Cry
12. John's Music Box
