The Grateful Dead may have wrapped up the final show of the first leg of their 1978 Spring Tour in a town called Normal, but this night was anything but! Yes, on this fine evening, the Rhythm Devils shook the room with an exotic tribal assault. Bob found his groove with the slide guitar, contrasting nicely with Keith's block chording, Phil's thundering and swooping bass-lines, Jerry's articulated leads. Heck, they even dabbled in disco, teasing the audience with an unmistakable riffs from "Stayin' Alive." What does all this juiced-up, cranked to the max, sonic savagery add up to? Top-level deliveries of fan favorites like "The Music Never Stopped," "Scarlet Begonias>Fire On The Mountain," and "Ramble On Rose," a jungle-vibed 14+ minute Rhythm Devils interlude, an over-the-top take on Warren Zevon's "Werewolves of London" and much, much more.

I used to have this on cassette......boring.
.....but I subscribed, so I'm getting it. Guess this is the flip side of getting the great last 1969 pick.

Too much late 70's lately.......I want some 1985 next.

I'd like to see more from the 68/69 period. Thats the portion of GD that I first got into.
I find the 1970s stuff a bit repetitive. But I still own 50 or so CDs from that era.

Completely disagree. Great show, along with most of '78.
Already have a Miller SBD of it ... so no need to buy it.

A 14 minute drums (ok - Rhythm Devils)...I hope to be enlighted on it. Here's to hoping they pad disc 2 with some nice extras like they did on one of Dick's Picks

I copied the traclkist from Dead.net......disc 2 is only going to be the 30+ minutes with no extras.

Sometimes they add it without acknowledgement. Like DP 13 - 05/06/1981

Yep, that was what I was referring to, just could recall which DP it was.

Disc 2 is as listed.

Listened to discs 1 & 2. The Music Never Stopped and Scarlet/Fire are very good versions......the rest, so far as I still remember, is only an OK show. The Staying Alive riff before Me & My Uncle is pretty funny.

It's sold out, so I'm sure alot disagree with me....and/or wanted to have Werewolves Of London.

Bummer re disc 2.
I started listening this morning to disc one. I do like the drumming, as the notes spend a lot of time discussing.

I could do without all of the "drums" & "space" segments" there are a number of Dead shows where I've been able to squeeze them on 1 less disc just by leaving those 2 segments out.

Drums/Space got alot better later in the 80's-90's as Mickey brought in more exotic percussion instruments and they started using more midi technology. During the last 4 years (92-95), there were times where drums/space was the best part of the show.

This is the weakest Dave's Pick since the 1st one. Music Never Stopped, Scarlet/Fire, and Black Peter were very good. Werewolves Of London is fun for the novelty. The rest is sluggish.

As a veteran of many Dead shows starting in 1978, I must admit that most Drums > Space sections were my opportunity to hit the head and then check out the scene at the venue.

Agreed this is one of the weaker shows from this period. Donna's vocals on FOTD are frightening.

Dear God, Werewolves is awful; it may be the worst vocals I've ever heard from the GD; & that's saying a lot!

I'm with ya. The Rythmn Devils was yikes.
I will add that I do like the Ramble On Rose a lot, and I did like the propulsion the drummers gave Promised Land...and a decent Around and Around...but yep...need to venture into some other eras for the next release.

The Staying Alive riff runs through both Me and My Uncle and Big River. Keith is playing the riff as fill through the first half of MAMU and I think it's Jerry that quotes it directly in a solo in BR. Made me laugh.
