The stellar 45-year career of singer-songwriter-guitarist Nils Lofgren receives a comprehensive retrospective in Face the Music, a limited edition nine-CD/one-DVD boxed set that is individually hand signed and numbered by the artist.

The collection's music component, selected by Lofgren himself, comprises 169 tracks, stretching back to Lofgren's early work with his Washington, D.C.-area band Grin, which he founded at the age of 17 in 1968, and surveying both his major-label solo albums and independent self-released music. Two of the CDs contain 40 previously unreleased tracks and rarities. The DVD features 20 video clips selected from a body of performances as diverse as Nils career.

A detailed, lavishly illustrated 136-page booklet, with an introduction by noted rock journalist Dave Marsh, contains Lofgren's track-by-track commentary and personal reflections on his work, as well as his tours of duty as a sideman with such luminaries as Neil Young, Bruce Springsteen, and Ringo Starr. The set also contains homages to Lofgren by such colleagues as Bonnie Raitt, Joe Walsh, Sting, Bono, and Paul Rodgers.

In its entirety, the set gives a comprehensive, intimately detailed picture of the performer Neil Young who hired the 18-year-old Lofgren to play piano and guitar on After the Gold Rush in 1969 calls an inspiration to me for many years. A true triple threat, Lofgren has distinguished himself as the writer of melodic, affecting, and hard-rocking songs, a sensitive and seemingly ageless singer, and a guitarist of incomparable power and imagination.

I'm going to change the title to July 8th under the assumption that both of them will be brought in line with the new Canadian release date that comfortablynumb spotted.

Here is a two part interview with great guitarist Nils Lofgren about his new 10 disc box set coming out, his career and time with the E Street Band. Funny, I found it on Yesnetwork.com, the TV channel of the NY Yankees. The interview is conducted by Jack Curry, Yes' Yankees reporter and music fan.

I just got an e-mail from Amazon that estimates the delivery date of this as August 5th.

I just received this set today and, while I haven't had a chance to listen yet, it is beautiful. The box is slim and its heft is just right. 10 discs. Lovely book; the signed limited edition card is cool. The artwork is great. The introductory note from Dave Marsh warms the heart. Can't wait to start playing it.

Nils is the man. About 8 years ago or so, he played The Paramount Theatre in Peekskill, NY with his solo band. It must have been an extra show added to his tour because the tickets went on sale a week before the date. I got an email from the venue and scored 2 tickets in the 1st row. I was pretty psyched to see him because I loved his 1975 solo album. That night when my wife and I got to the Paramount, the place was empty. I couldn't believe it. By showtime there was tops, 20 people in the audience. I figured they were going to cancel the show but Nils came out onstage, plugged in and played a solid 2 hours. In between songs he shared stories about his battle with the bottle and his life in music. He could have just phoned it in and left but instead he cranked out killer tunes and then to top it off, he hung out in the lobby after the show for at least a half hour signing autographs and posing for photos with literally the whole audience. Who the F*&K does that? Nils Lofgren thats who. When I got home that night I went online and bought all the Nils CD's I didn't already have, just like I bought this box. Great music from a 1st class rocker and a Gentleman.

It goes up to at least 2,129. That's my number.
