Product Description
Playlist: The Very Best of Big Star features 14 tracks from guitarist and singer Alex Chilton's pioneering power pop combo, from their 1972 debut album #1 Record to the 2005 reunion effort In Space. Seven of the 14 selections first appeared on Columbia: Live at Missouri University, which documents a 1993 reunion show that was Big Star's first live date in 18 years, with Chilton and drummer Jody Stephens joined by Ken Stringfellow and Jon Auer from the Posies. Rehearsal tapes and songs from the albums #1 Record, Radio City, and Third/Sister Lovers fill out this idiosyncratic overview of one of the most influential cult acts of the 1970s.

1. Life Is White – from Radio City
2. Feel – from #1 Record
3. September Gurls (Rehearsal) – from Nobody Can Dance
4. Daisy Glaze – From Radio City
5. Stroke It Noel – from 3rd
6. Kanga-Roo – from 3rd
7. Don’t Lie To Me (Live) – from Columbia: Live At Missouri University
8. I Am The Cosmos (Live) – from Columbia: Live At Missouri University
9. In The Street (Live) – from Columbia: Live At Missouri University
10. The Ballad Of El Goodo (Live) – from Columbia: Live At Missouri University
11. For You (Live) – from Columbia: Live At Missouri University
12. Back Of A Car (Live) – from Columbia: Live At Missouri University
13. Thank You Friends (Live) – from Columbia: Live At Missouri University
14. A Whole New Thing – from In Space

Half the cuts from Columbia? A rehearsal of September Gurls? Only one cut from #1 Record? REALLY?

Really. It was surprisingly good to listen to straight through, but I'm not sure that I'd ever play the disc a second time.

I'm not surprised. As much as the track list is full of missed opportunities, what's there is still pretty great. And I always find it refreshing to hear good but familiar music in a different order.

I just can't believe they left off so many great tracks from #1 Record and Radio City.

I can't remember the last time that I listened to In Space. That album left very little impression, even though I really like Columbia and am a huge fan of The Posies.
