Think the phrase "proto metal," and the usual suspects come to mind - Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, etc. But only a select few have known that an obscure Brooklyn, New York-based band, Dust, was one of the first stateside bands to crank their amps up to ten and let it rip. And now, thanks to a reissue of the group's two albums, 1971's self-titled debut and 1972's 'Hard Attack,' as a remastered (from the original analog master tapes) single CD, now many rock fans will finally discover the sonic proof.

Both albums were originally released on the Kama Sutra label in the early seventies. Dust was also the beginning of the three members amazing careers. Kenny Aaronson (bass) went on the play with everyone from Bob Dylan, Billy Idol, Joan Jett, The New York Dolls and the list goes on. Marc Bell - a.k.a. Marky Ramone was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame and receive a Grammy Lifetime Achievement award for his work with the Ramones. Richie Wise continued on as a producer with his partner Kenny Kerner, their producer credits include the number one hits "Midnight Train to Georgia" and "Brother Louie". They also produced the first two Kiss albums (Kiss, Hotter Than Hell).

Sigh...another missed opportunity. There was one lone Dust rarity that absolutely should have been added to this: They released a 45 of "Love Me Hard" from the first album, but it was a totally new and different re-recording clocking in at 3:06 (versus the LP version at 5:25). When One Way was preparing to reissue the first album back in the 90s, I contacted Terry Wachsmuth at the label (he later left and founded the Wounded Bird label doing similar reissues). He was totally unaware of the 45 being a completely different version but was able to obtain it and add it to the first Dust reissue (OW 29309). It was so "last-minute" that it isn't listed on the cover or in the booklet, but the disc itself does list track 8 as "Love Me Hard" (45 version).

I have to assume this omission is again due to ignorance of this track being a different version and which would be a perfect bonus track to make this the complete Dust release (even with the track, both discs clock in at under 80 minutes so time isn't an issue). If ANYONE knows any way to contact anyone directly involved with this upcoming mid-April Sony/Legacy release and alert them to this, please do!!!

The 2 Dust LPs went from cut-out bin filler to collector's items when Mark Bell joined the Ramones. I bought them at Just A Song in Albany for $1.99 each.

Indeed, I bought a lot of albums at Just A Song for $1.99 each.
