Description
'Fine Young Cannibals' was the self titled debut album released by the Birmingham band in 1985. The success of their UK debut single 'Johnny Come Home' did not continue with their next single, 'Blue', which languished at number 41 on the UK singles chart. However, the release of the Elvis classic 'Suspicious Minds' returned them to the top ten in early 1986. This CD features the tracks from the original album plus three bonus tracks and a second disc featuring some of their best remixes of 'Johnny Come Home' and 'Suspicious Minds'.

Edsel Records will reissue 2CD Deluxe Editions of both Fine Young Cannibals albums later this year, with a tentative release date scheduled for 29 October.

The Birmingham based band formed in 1984, and were made up of Andy Cox, David Steele (both formerly of The Beat) and singer Roland Gift. Their eponymous debut album was released a year later with single Johnny Come Home reaching the top 10 in the UK singles chart.


The Raw & the Cooked was a massive success in the US

But it was with the second album, 1988′s The Raw & the Cooked, that the band saw massive success. She Drives Me Crazy and Good Thing both reached number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 and were both top ten hits in the UK. In 1990 a remix album The Raw & the Remix was released with multiple reworkings of tracks from The Raw & the Cooked.

The band only ever released these two studio albums and various compilations appeared in the decades that followed, including The Finest from 1996 which included a new recording, The Flame (released as a single). A 2CD version of this compilation included a bonus disc entitled The Rare and the Remixed which contained hard to find tracks such as the Cole Porter cover Love For Sale (from the Red Hot + Blue charity album) and yet more remixes.

Edsel are working with Steele and Cox on these reissues, so that bodes well. We can expect a large selection of remixes to be included in these 2CD sets along with a ‘mopping up’ exercise to ensure all other non-album studio recordings (such as The Flame) are included.

I was just thinking about these guys the other day. Two great albums that were of their time and yet timeless, then they were gone. Talk about a group that went out at the top of their game...

FYC's debut has the dubious distinction of being the first album I bought more than once on CD. I originally had the 10-track import but then they just had to throw a couple of bonus tracks on the American release. I resisted at first but finally gave in. That was the first time I re-bought a CD so I could get a "better" version but, boy oh boy, it was far from the last.

I'm sure I'll have to have both of these; it'll be nice to have it all together in two jewel cases.

It was strange how for a moment Roland Gift was poised to be a big thing (he even acted) and then was gone as was the band.
Both albums got a lot of play in my home and at parties.

Hopefully the 2 Men, A Drum Machine and a Trumpet track “Tired of Getting Pushed Around” will be included somehow!

Well, looks like that didn't happen -- there are at least 3 B-sides missing ("Good Times And Bad," "Prick Up Your Ears," "Pull The Sucker Off"). Not to mention the 2 Men A Drum Machine And A Trumpet tracks. Disappointing.

The first album looks good, and the b-sides alone are enough to hook me. As for the follow-up album, I've always loathed it and never understood why it was so incredibly popular and the first one so relatively overlooked/ignored/dismissed.

Nope. A bit of a disaster all round. AGAIN.

What is it with reissues? The quality control and research is appaling.

At least those three b-sides can be had easily enough on "She Drives Me Crazy: The Best Of..."

True, though I believe that comp suffers from a mastering error on "Good Times And Bad" -- an odd skip in the music that happens maybe 30-40 seconds before the end. (At least I assume it's a mastering error, since I can't imagine the original sounded that way.) I was hoping it would have been fixed for the new reissue.

Looks promising for the additional tracks alone.

I think it just took time for them to catch on, especially in America. The first album has a timeless quality while the second one had more then-trendy production touches, but I've grown to love them both.

The debut album was one of my first ever CDs, at just over 30 minutes I was not impressed considering the cost of CDs at that time here in Australia. I recently sold it for quite a bit as it is a rare German arrow mastered CD. I was never really a fan of the album.
